For TRU-BEAT PRODUCTIONS, music is a gift…a wonderful feeling inside your soul – it’s the way of life.
TRU-BEAT PRODUCTIONS was formed in January 2000 to primarily harness and focus the spirit and energy of it’s co-founder Carlton J. Smith. “From the very first time I saw this man on stage and spoke with him afterwards, I knew I had to provide a forum that would help to propel his career forward. That night Tru-Beat was born.”
Trudie Eppich acts as a personal manager to her talented business partner Carlton. Trudie Eppich immediately set about putting the wheels in motion. First up was arranging showcases for Carlton. He sang, wrote, arranged and produced all his own material. They found musicians to form Carlton’s backing band named “The Mighty Magnificents”. Carlton can be seen performing worldwide, as well as at various venues in the States. Carlton has been given the title of “R&B King of New York”…and has been named “Soul Brother Number New” by none other than Alan Leeds (road manager for James Brown/Prince).
In the interim, Tru-Beat decided to commemorate and honor some of the most timeless music ever created. Trudie and Carlton gathered other artists who were equally as serious about their careers and at that point “Carlton J. Smith and Friends” was formed. Every month they pay homage to a particular label, artist, or musical genre that has stood the test of time. Tru-Beat produces tributes to the music of Motown, Stax/Atlantic Records, Sly and The Family Stone, Al Green, James Brown and a host of other legends. Carlton’s widely acclaimed R&B/Soul Revue shows are real crowd-pleasers.
Trudie and Carlton have met and/or worked with many talented artists of all styles and genres over the years. These selected artists/vocalists are included in various tribute shows and showcases. Carlton J. Smith hosts and performs at each of these tribute shows along with these talented artists. Artists such as Chennette X. Barretto, L*A*W (George Clinton/P-Funk), Karl Dixon (Ray Charles Revue), Kevin Anthony (Black 2 Broadway), Carmen Lydia Rodriguez (Emilio Estavez/Nuevas Voces de América), “Three” (phenominal group from Philly), Kimberla, Sharon Quinn (Monique’s FAT Chance Beauty Pageant), Ramona Hunter, Darchele, Trevor McCollum, Anna Evenou.
Tru-Beat negotiates and promotes tours for Carlton worldwide bringing this brand of Real School Funk & Soul to other venues throughout America and various countries (China, Japan, Switzerland, England, Europe, Australia, North Africa…et.al.). Carlton J. Smith is fast becoming the International Soul Brother Number New, as well.
Tru-Beat has a true entertainer in its hands. Carlton’s talent is not only limited to singing, writing, producing – but also acting. This talent is so widely acclaimed that he was also chosen from a casting call of 500 to portray the “Godfather of Soul” James Brown on the silver screen in Barry Levinson’s film “Liberty Heights.” Carlton co-starred opposite Joe Mantegna, Bebe Neuwirth and Adrian Brody. Carlton also expanded his horizons into theatre (David Henry Hwang - “M. Butterfly” and “Aida”). In 2003, he played opposite Cyndi Lauper, Fisher Stephens and Garth Hudson (The Band), as well as appearing on the TV Soap Opera “As The World Turns.”
Always keeping busy, Carlton is constantly writing and producing new songs. Carlton is always recording new material. Tru-Beat constantly books studio time with Mark Unthank (Exile Records), Charles Newman (Mother West Studios), Brian Quill (GE Music), to name a few. Carlton has an amazing and extensive library of music. This music library is available for submissions to television shows, advertising campaigns, movies and more.

Carlton has been in Shanghai helping out with publicity and promotion of the "new" House of Blues & Jazz which is now located in The Bund area of Shanghai at No. 60 FuZhou Road. Call to make reservations: 021 6323 2779 or 021 6437 5280.

Just a quick note to let you all know that Carlton is ok and well. The earthquake did most of its destruction in Chengdu … tremors were felt in Beijing and Shanghai.
Carlton is living in a high-rise apartment building in Shanghai. Some of his neighbors experienced these tremors and their buildings swayed … however, as luck would have it and as blessed as he is … Carlton was on the ground floor at the time. Thank you Lord!!!
