About True Womanhood

True Womanhood is an "avant pop" band from Washington D.C., composed of Thomas Redmond (vocals, guitar); Melissa Beattie (bass, aux); and Noam Elsner (percussion, aux). Initially formed in early 2008, True Womanhood did not begin in earnest until May of that same year.

The group places pop-based hooks in the context of a more experimental aesthetic. The resulting produces on-edge songs that have been described as "graveyard jams" by concert-goers. They are known for their untraditional instrumentation which includes the "Iron Volcano" (a metal funnel), "scythetar," tympani, a dulled, 4-foot blade, etc. The group also engage in double-drumming and use vintage drum machines in conjunction with live drumming to lend their music extra live energy.
