About the Slam:

The Eugene Poetry Slam is the place for great local poets, a lively audience, and renowned guest spoken word artists. The night kicks off with an Open Mic, followed by a Featured Poet, and then moves into the Slam itself.

Slam is the competitive performance of spoken word. It generally combines elements of theater with the more traditional poetry reading, which makes for riveting and moving performances. But, as many slam veterans will tell you, slam is really about getting people interested and involved in poetry and - what do you know it works.

The Eugene Poetry Slam is open to all and is judged by volunteers from the audience. Guests can sign up for the open mic, to be a judge, or to compete. Sign up begins at 7:00pm and the show starts at 7:30pm.

The competition happens in two rounds and the top three poets win cash prizes and a spot in the Finals in May, where they can compete for a chance to be part of the next Eugene Slam Team!

Slam Rules: 1) Original work ONLY. We want to hear what YOU have to say. Reading the work of any other writer is not permissible.

2) NO props; i.e. no musical instruments, costumes etc. Just you, your words and a microphone. (Memorization is encouraged but not necessary; you may read your work off paper if you desire).

3) Poems should be 3 Minutes long. You will be timed. There is a 10 second grace period, but after 3 minutes 10 seconds, points will be deducted based on the amount of time you go over the limit. Remember to time your pieces when you practice ; )

4) You cannot perform the same poem twice in one Slam season, with the exception of the Finals in May. If you have made it to the Finals, you may then choose to repeat a poem that you performed earlier in the season.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Hello folks, Just to let you know that most of our events fill the parking lot, as well as the surrounding neighborhood parking …so it would be nice if more people coming to our events rode their bikes, walked, took public transportation, car-pooled, or teleported.

Thursday, December 3, 6:30-8:30PM: A Reading by members of Swan Song, the 4J International High School literary magazine. (free)

Sunday, December 6, 4-6PM: The Every Firtst Tsunday Tsunami Old Time Tstring Orchetstra returns! (free)

Also Sunday, December 6, 7-9PM: Jessica Maxwell, Salem resident and author of “Roll Around Heaven: An All-True Accidental Spiritual Adventure,” reads from and signs copies of her book. Jessica’s book has been described as what happens when Lucille Ball meets God, as well as the next “Eat, Pray, Love.” With this book garnering rave reviews from Booklist and Publishers Weekly, the evening promises a great fun time for all. Home made refreshments and tea will be served. (free)

Thursday, December 10, 7PM: Live-Lit West! U of O Masters Students of Creative Writing read from works in progress. (free)

Friday, December 11, 8-10:30PM: Musical Sensations The Bad Mitten Orchestra and Performing Con-Artist Extraordinaire Ty Connor. The Bad Mittens play what may be called lyrical folk cabaret music; a mostly female bunch reminiscent of Tom Waits. Ty, a perennial winner of both Best Performer and Best Bartender in town (Eugene Weekly), is also the voice of the Eugene Roller Derby. Get ready, folks, for a ripping good evening. ($8.00, 21 and over only!)

Saturday, December 12, 7PM: The All-Ages Poetry Tslam, Round 3, comes to Tsunami. This is the third of eight slams, to be held the second Saturday of every month through May. Sponsored and hosted by Jorah Lafleur, Jon Labrousse, The Lane Arts Council, and Tsunami Books. Folksinger Prajna will be busking from 6:40 to 7:30. Sign-up begins at 7, an open mike (un-judged) begins at 7:30, featured poet at 8, and the slam (up to 15 poets, 2 rounds) begins at 8:30. Judges will be picked at random from the audience, money and prizes to the top three poets. December’s champ wins $100.00! This month’s featured poet is Bend slam champion Terran Randolph, a.k.a. “Manifest Destiny.” ($5.00)

Thursday, December 17, 7PM: Jan Spencer presents Global Trends, Local Choices. GTLC is a timely, practical, and humane call for personal empowerment and action, given the economic, cultural, and environmental trends of our times. It comes in the form of a narrated digital slide show, a virtual “best of” the many presentations on these issues made by Jan Spencer of Eugene, Oregon (www.suburbanpermaculture.org). GTLC offers real world examples of ecological culture change and affirms that virtually all the assets, models, and tools for creating a healthy and peaceful world already exist. (donations)
