Members and friends of the Tucson Jazz Society have a chance to help TJS financially, simply by having a good time for themselves. At 3 p.m. on Nov. 29 (the first Sunday after Thanksgiving) Chamber Music Plus Southwest will present its music and theater program "Pardon My English: Gershwin by Ira," a portrait of George Gershwin as seen through the eyes of his brother Ira.
Cast in the title role is visiting guest artist Robert Picardo (most recently of TV's "Star Trek:Voyager" fame), assisted by Tucson jazzers Jeff Haskell, piano, and Katherine Byrnes, vocalist. Playwright and concert cellist Harry Clark wrote the stage play, which is combined onstage with George Gershwin's compositions to create a three-dimensional portrait that is a combination of music and theater.
For details about the performance, and to purchase tickets, visit www.cmpsouthwest.org All individual tickets are $35. Be sure to mention the Tucson Jazz Society so TJS will receive $15 back from your ticket purchase.

"We went to many jazz events together over the years," said Al Cook, a former board member. "We'd take our wives. We saw Les Brown downtown many years ago."
Both men were big fans of swing bands, and credit Benny Goodman with bringing them to jazz when they were teenagers.
"Steve had a huge record collection," Cook remembered. "I think he had everything Benny Goodman ever recorded."
In local jazz circles, Emerine was frequently seen out and about, attending events, supporting and encouraging local musicians. His reviews of new CDs, often recorded by Tucson players, appeared regularly on Amazon.com. Because of his encyclopedic knowledge of jazz, his opinions were always well-respected.
"Because of his background, he was uniquely suited to be president of the board," Cook said. "He was an experienced newspaper editor (and publisher), did consulting work and had his own public relations agency.
"He knew how to do things the right way, how things should be done in the community.
"At certain critical times in the jazz society's history, we met often to discuss strategies," Cook remembered.
Oct 14 2009 1:19 AM
Even in the last few years, without any standing as a board member, Emerine was there to help others.
"He was always willing to offer suggestions as the jazz society had to re-organize with an all-volunteer office. I was always emailing him to ask for advice," said Bernice Chesi, one of the volunteers.
While others remember Emerine best for his ethical newspaper work, his years as county assessor and his service to the city, Tucson's jazz community remembers him best as one who not only loved the music but wanted to help others love it as well. For them, his presence will always be truly missed.
The line-up of musicians who will be paying their tribute from the stage is still evolving. At present, the players officially on board are Jeff Haskell, piano, Julie Anne, vocalist, Scott Black, bass, Eleonor Winston, vocalist, Brice Winston, reeds, Arthur Statman, piano, and Jack Wood, bass. Putting it all together as producer is Pete Swan.
Tickets are $20 general admission, $15 TJS members, $10 students and military. Buy tickets at www.tucsonjazz.org, or 1-800-595-4849. Tickets are also available at the door.
