Tully Mackay-Tisbert grew up in the Adirondack mountains of upstate New York. At a young age he developed a passion for music. Picking up the electric guitar he made many irritating sounds and kept playing until it started to sound alright. At an early age he also acquired an interest in Zen Buddhism, and began to develop a taste for traditional asian music. At age 17 all of these elements began to play off eachother, and Tully picked up the acoustic guitar, as well as the Chinese lute known as the pipa, and wrote his first songs. Around this time he went to sesshin at a Zen temple in the Catskills. His neighbor had to wake him up for zazen or he would over sleep, and the kyusaku was used many times to help him stay awake in the zendo. Shortly after in 2004 Tully relocated to Hilo, Hawaii and then New Mexico later that year. He returned to Hilo and ended up homeless sleeping in a flood channel. Feeling like a lone stray, he still had his music as it travelled with him and he continued working on songs and further exploring and developing his distinct sound. In 2006 he got it together, was housed and continued writing. In early 2007 after serious drinking in Fall of 2006, he decided return to a pure state and began the process of recording his first album 'The Precipice.' He converted what used to be a laundry room into his living space and studio. For 6 months he worked and listened, and the resulting product was a rough and imperfect collection of 11 passionate and emotional songs, stripped down for the most part to just acoustic guitar and vocals, offering a raw simplicity. After recording Tully left Hawaii for Cambodia. His guitar relocated to an orphanage there where he spent time volunteering. He also volunteered with an organization that worked to bring clean water to impoverished families in the countryside, called the trailblazer foundation, to combat infant mortality rates due to water-borne illness in a country where the government provides no infrastructure. After Cambodia he returned to Hawaii, and to lots of drinking, trouble making, and some fighting. In October 2007, the 'The Precipice' was released and was given a positive review from Indie-Music.com and well received by its listeners. Towards the end of 2008 Tully began work on the second recording, though abandoned the project shortly after due to frustration. By early 2008 Tully had tired of being a fish cutter, his occupation at the time, and decided to relocate to Los Angeles. There he joined the band Attic of Love playing bass, an intellectual rock band that integrated flute. Through his time in Los Angeles he worked with an organization trying to help the homeless, in an area with one of the largest homeless populations in the United States. For over a year he lived in Los Angeles and resumed working on the second album entitled 'Anitya' in early 2009. This project became collaborative with Andrew Tisbert adding flute tracks and production input and George Liebel on percussion. The album was a deeper exploration of Tully's sound, folk rock that blends the influence of traditional asian music. The album listens like a recognition of mistakes and imperfections and the effort to live wholly and find peace in one's life. Anitya is the principal in Buddhism that everything is impermanent and that true joy stems from recognizing and accepting this. Through this acceptance and awareness of the transient nature of things we can wholly appreciate life in this present moment. This album 'anitya' is about working on this acceptance and the interaction between mistakes, failures, ideals and the resulting lessons. The album is due August 2009. Tully has since left Los Angeles and is somewhere between there and Austin, Texas. Enjoy 'Anitya.'
