Tupolev began life as post-rock-ers but have moved beyond the clichés into more fertile territory: sustaining tension rather than building to tear-jerking climaxes, creating moments of awkward beauty rather than pleasant ambience. “Memories of Bjorn Bolssen”, like the most successful art-rock, pulls in the low and the high without getting stuck in the middlebrow.
Tupolev’s driving bass and drums pin down hanging piano chords that move in unpredictable progressions of dissonance and melody. The electronics are tasteful and austere, high frequency clicks and squeals that compliment rather than distract. It’s a refreshing change from the glut of ‘folk/psych/other’.

It's a bit of weird line up, but the combination works well. The piano sounds as a piano, and usually takes the solo in a song. Drums and bass play the spine and electronics have a free role play in this one. All the songs are instrumental and they some guestplayers on pieces, providing a guitar, clarinet or just 'ambience'. Its hard to avoid the Radian et al influence on Tupolev, even when it has more emphasis on a 'normal' song structure. There is great variation in the songs, uptempo, downtempo, rock like, jazz like, introvert and extravert which makes this quite a nice album of almost post rock, but in a wider musical field.

Niemand weiß, wer Bjöen Bolssen ist, aber eines steht fest: Seine Erinnerungen müssen zumindest sehr anregend gewesen sein. Denn sie inspirierten die junge Wiener Band Tupolev dazu, von den alten Post-rock-mustern ihrer Debüt-EP abzulassen und sich auf neues, ambitionierte und ungemein spannende musikalische Wege zu begeben. Die nach Bolssen benannte Platte ist ein stimmungsvolles und detailverliebtes Experimentalalbum par excellence geworden, Sie hat sehr luftige Arrangements, in denen Klängen Platz zum besonderen Ausdruck gelassen wird, und Kompositionen, die trotz aller Abstraktion großartige Atmosphären auf sehr subtilen Ebenen generieren. Die Errungenschaften der Mogwai-Stilart haben Tupolev mittlerweile komplett hinter sich gelassen, stattdessen bringen sie Jazz, Kraut und verschiedene Streben der E-Musik zusammen, und dadurch strahlen ihr Talent und ihrer neu erworbenen instrumentalen Fertigkeiten in vollem Glanz. Sehr dezente Laptop-Sounds und ein an Notwist erinnernder und nur für das Stück " Nothing's Gonna Happen" genutzter klagender Gesang vervollkommnen das so gekonnt wie gereift wirkende Gesamtbild. Obwohl das Durchschnittsalter der Band noch deutlich unterhalb der 30 liegen muss, ist " Memories of Björn Bolssen" ein Album geworden, das die Wiener Schule um Radian und Fennesz um ein nicht geringes Maß bereichert.

Das Wiener Quartett improvisiert mit Klavier, Bass, Cello, Schlagzeug und Electronics irgendwo zwischen Neuer Musik, Jazz und Postrock. Ihre Tracks entwickeln sich langsam, die Musik ist meist ruhig und entspannt, schließlich lässt die Band oft jedem Ton genug Zeit, sich zu entwickeln. Erinnerungen an Radian werden wach, Tupolev sind aber doch weniger abstrakt und eher songorientiert, mit einem stabilen Gerüst aus Bass/Cello und Schlagzeug sowie dem solierenden Piano und Akzente setzender Elektronik. Überraschend schön auch der Gesang, der durchaus mehr Raum verdient hätte.

Auf dem Debut-Album entführen die vier Mödlinger in eine abseitige Welt zwischen Bartok und Silver Mt. Zion. Das ist anstrengend, kraftvoll und hypnotisch zugleich. Vielleicht weil die Avantgarde längst zur Schublade verkommen ist, vielleicht weil ihre durchkomponierte Musik zwischen Kammermusik, Jazz und Postrock so kompromisslos ist, wurde Tupolev bislang nur im Pop-Kontext wahrgenommen. Spätestens mit diesem ihrem Debut-Album haben sich Tupolev aber die Aufmerksamkeit des Jazz-Publikums verdient. Auch das eigene Label Valeot Records, das sich der "music in betwwen" widmet, ist jede erdenkliche Aufmerksamkeit wert. Einer der interessantesten und eigenständigsten österreichischen Acts.

Vicini ai nostrani Port-Royal(du cui sono amici e con cui hanno condiviso il palco), i Zupolev vengono dall'Austria. E ad ascoltarli lo si direbbe: mitteleuropei e responsabili di un suono classico(proprio nel senso di musica classica) che si unisce al rock sperimentale. II loro esordio e fuori dal tempo non solo per le coordinate musicali(per esempio, il pianoforte con i suoi accordi da dramma imminente e pressoche costante lungo tutto il disco), ma anche perche album del genere li si ascoltava con piu frequenza una dozzina di anni fa, quando la csiddetta scena post-rock di louisville dominava l'avangurdia rock. Molti sono i figli di quei giorni che resero grandi Slint, Rachel's, June of 44, Tortoise e compagnia. E i Tupolev sono fra di loro. Cerebrali(Reaset, A Scale of Gaps, fra fratture ritmiche, piatti che riecheggiano, chitarre alla moviola e rintocchi di pianoforte), ma con una grande eleganza che li riscatta dall'effetto nostalgia.

Ci sono dischi che hanno bisogno di tempo per entrare sotto pelle. "Memories of Björn Bolssen" e uno di questi. Un album denso e stratificato, per niente epidermico. Lo hanno registrato tre ragazzi austriaci ed uno ucraino che condividono una passione smisurata per la musica. Dalla classica al pop, passandro per il jazz e per la visto suonare i Port-Royal dal vivo avra avuto la fortuna di vederli dal vivo. Il loro suono e per nulla scontato: un amalgama originale di post-rock e jazz tenuta assieme da uno strato di elettronica viva. Con i trentacinque minuti di " Memories of Björn Bolssen" i Tupolev danno prova di sapersi muovere egregiamente anche dentro uno studio di registrazione.

Derrière une esthétique et un patronyme aux charmes surannées, Tupolev fait ses premiers pas discographiques sur le tout nouveau et prometteur label Valeot Records, après avoir délivré quelques morceaux aux sonorités post-rock / folk disponibles sur le netlabel 12rec.
Néanmoins, les quatre membres du groupe sont loin d’être des néophytes et ont déjà collaboré avec nombre d’artistes de la scène autrichienne - le groupe est basé à Vienne - et d’ailleurs (notamment les italiens de Port-Royal). Surtout, Memories Of Björn Bolssen (nos recherches sont restées vaines quant à l’identité de ce personnage, renforçant un peu plus encore le mystère entourant ce disque) est la preuve probante et éclatante des qualités de Tupolev, tant en terme de composition que d’instrumentation, à la fois acoustique et électronique. Le ton est feutré, les éléments agencés avec minutie au gré de plages instrumentales tour à tour courtes, organisées autour d’un piano et d’une ligne de basse, ou bien au contraire, étirées jusqu’à la dissolution (Garlic 07 et son violoncelle solennelle).
Dans ce registre, Tupolev lorgne vers la musique classique de chambre (évidemment) comme l’entend The Rachel’s ou encore vers des expérimentations cinématiques. Mais parfois, le quatuor adopte plus de spontanéité dès que la batterie s’emmêle, en parfait contrepoint à l’austérité du piano de Peter Holly, ce qui laisse transparaître les influences jazz du groupe. Quant à l’introduction du chant sur les dernières minutes de Nothing’s Gonna Happen, cela ouvre de nouvelles perspectives à Tupolev. Memories Of Björn Bolssen est de ces albums discrets qui méritent bien des attentions.

Il faut imaginer. A la fin du Décaméron, le cinéaste italien Pier Paolo Pasolini jouant lui-même le rôle de Giotto, le fameux peintre du Trecento, se dit, presque sous le ton d’un aveu : « Pourquoi réaliser une œuvre, alors qu’il est si beau de seulement la rêver ? ». C’est cette fresque imaginaire que propose les autrichiens de Tupolev, l’œil écoutant le récit muet et l’esprit rêvant les souvenirs de Björn Bolssen. Ces derniers sont éparpillés, défragmentés, comme les pièces d’un appartement que l’oreille traverse. Les morceaux, comme les pièces, communiquent entre eux, mais c’est toujours une ombre différente qui les hante : de petites notes de piano qui se dissipent (“8.83”, “Short Reminder”), un long geste méditatif (“Garlic 07”), une tension contrôlée à merveille (“Scale of gasps”), des mouvements saccadés (“Rnd2”), un jeu puissant (“Reaset”), une délicieuse légèreté (“Mohavedi”). L’œil admire la maîtrise de l’harmonie, l’agencement des temps morts et rythmés où tous ces fragments se donnent comme un lieu de passage ; car c’est une absence qui structure l’album, lui donne sa « couleur » et sa dynamique. Tupolev, déjà avec ce premier album, arrive à ouvrir la musique, dissoudre ses formes, à l’enlever de sa torpeur. Inutile d’essayer d’en savoir plus sur le dénommé Björn Bolssen, dont le regard sur la pochette est fixé à jamais ; car c’est quand les mains se crispent et l’écriture s’arrête que commence sa véritable histoire.

Tupolev komt uit Oostenrijk en Memories of Björn Bolssen is hun eerste cd, die al sinds mei uit schijnt te zijn. Hun muziek is vrijwel instrumentaal (alleen in "Nothing's Gonna Happen" worden een paar woorden gezongen), maar de zang mis ik geen moment. Daarvoor is het samenspel van Peter Holy (piano), Alexandre Vatagin (bas en cello), Lukas Scholler (elektronische snuisterijen) en Paul Mohavdi (drums en gitaar) veel te boeiend. Ik vraag me al luisterend naar hun jazzy nachtclub post-rock dan ook af wie die Björn Bolssen dan wel niet geweest is die deze Oostenrijkers tot deze prachtige plaat geleid heeft. Al google-end en Wikipedia-end kom ik namelijk nergens uit. De negen songs, die stuk voor stuk een melancholische inborst hebben, geven met rare titels als "rnd2", "8.83", "reaset" ook weinig houvast en zelfs een naam als "mohavedi" eindigt nergens bij een zoekopdracht. Ergens is dat wel mooi, zo'n instrumentaal album dat in nevelen gehuld blijft, maar door het veelvuldige luisteren wil ik ondertussen toch van de hoed en de rand weten.

Our new album "Herbarium" is

Diverse palette of styles (post-rock,
ambient, electronica, trip-hop, with elements of noise, dub,
neoclassic and free improvisation), united by cinematic, slightly
pensive mood.
«Herbarium» is called so
because of heterogeneity of «songs», which can be
compared to miscellaneous leaves in the album, still being belonged
to the family of trees. Trying to avoid non-alive metaphors here,
only thought of diversity and warm and innermost feeling that
herbarium is capable to conjure up. «... This leaf I picked up
in the park where I met her, and this - I sat by the river,
contemplating...». So tracks were created – one was captured
in some magic jam, another – recorded layer by layer and
meticulously mixed then, next – cut from previous sessions and so
on.
All compositions are united by Poostosh
sense of music – mostly pensive, spatial, tender and experimental.
There's a lot of soul and charisma in every leaf... So please let
your soul look over our HERBARIUM.
