Turiya performing Crack's in the Hallway
Video from an assembly performance at Madison High School, early December 2008.
* PLEASE NOTE this piece discusses issues of drug addiction and contains a repeated swear word. For more info about the background and inspiration for the piece see below.
Turiya gives background on piece Crack's in the Hallway:
It is unique in several ways, all of which are fairly significant to my path as an artist.
Television
Good Sista/ Bad Sista: performing Supa Soul Sistas at Wordstock Poetry Slam, fall 2008.
PLEASE NOTE this clip contains a variety of "language." So if swear words aren't appropriate for you or your situation/age this may not be the clip for you.
Now outside of that warning, this recording captures us doing our most recent version of Supa Soul Sista, which still cracks me up! ENJOY!

What's good never heard back from U. Diggin' the dope-etry as always. I don't know if I ever told U and Wahlidah that u 2 inspired me 2 start writing poetry more, so thank U both 4 that. Plz leave a comment on the music when U get a chance. GiT BaCK!!
A love letter to Turiya, always the Good Sista to me:
I know we joked about writing each other anonymous love letters, but I realize I have written so many love letters to people who were so unworthy of that energy or attention, and I sometimes take for granted the love I have every day that sustains me and supports me.
Turiya, you are one of the most beautiful people I have had the privilege of knowing in this life, inside and out. You have carried me through difficult times with your laughter, with your hugs, with your presence.
Your home is an oasis to me because of your spirit and energy, a place I know I can always go to be surrounded by the love that you birthed and sustain every day.
You have raised two of the most amazing people I know, and that is no small feat in a world that seeks to destroy spirits, especially if they are of a darker hue. Your children are brilliant, loving, aware, engaged, creative, hilarious, beautiful, whole human beings. And I hope you take the credit you deserve for nurturing and molding such people.
I love performing with you. Being on stage with you is always something that feeds my spirit, regardless of whether or not the audience is giving love. Hell, practicing with you is fun. Perhaps that's why I follow you into the bathroom demanding you run through lines. In many ways, I feel like our poetry together is a metaphor for our interactions; we take time and energy to create, we pour ourselves into it, create something new, and then we learn it so well that we can improvise, we can flow, we can make mistakes and still keep moving forward, even turn them into something better than the original.
So many of the opportunities I have here in Portland are because of you, the teaching experiences that give me hope have come, most of them, directly from you. You always have faith in my abilities, even when I don't. You push me to try harder, and also to take care of myself in the process. You enable me in cr
Miss you lots always and forever. There's alot to catch up on but even more tyme to do, so I can't wait to relapse on our friendship, it's been far to long. My Turiya tank is empty...Hope to hear from you soon. Love Def
Hello lovely. I'm sorry we didn't end up getting together this weekend. I needed a low-key, lazy weekend. When you have the time, you should call or write me. I have things to tell you! I love you! *mwah*
