..The Turk Island Jazz Band is a recent formation of long-time traditional jazz musicians in the San Francisco south and East bay areas. Inspired by the many fans of Dixieland, the members decided to form a new group to explore the many different variations on the traditional jazz genre, from the genre's roots in New Orleans through the Kansas City and Chicago eras... ..Band pictures, sample tunes and additional biographical information will be coming soon, so watch this space!.. ....Band Bios:.... ....Lyle Gillison- Saxophone/Clarinet:.... Lyle C. Gillison was born in Billings. Montana and grew up in the western town of Cody, Wyoming. His early interest in music was attributed to a favorite uncle who played the Saxophone in the big bands prevalent in the 40's and fifties. After having his own small group band in high school, Lyle studied music at the University of Northern Colorado and pursued the study of woodwind instruments... He enjoyed teaching young students to play all of the band and orchestral instruments for thirty years in the public schools of Milpitas, California. During this time he played Solo bassoon with the San Jose Wind Symphony and played Saxophone and Clarinet for many musical shows... Lyle decided to expand his love of music to extend his taste and experience to all kinds of popular music. His favorite ;pastimes now include playing traditional jazz Dixieland Music. His other hobbies include painting portraits, landscapes and still life. Lyle and his wife Ruth live in Santa Clara, California... ....Jim Harget- Banjo:.... Jim has been playing traditional jazz for a long time, culminating in his formation of the Top of the Hill Jazz Band. As an outreach coordinator and jamset director for the South Bay Traditional Jazz Society, Jim is responsible for presenting a good lineup of jamset musicians at the monthly Society meetings. He also leads the parade band for the Society. When not playing in his own band or sitting in with other groups, Jim can be found promoting the merits of traditional jazz... ....TR Newcomb, Trombone:.... Rich Newcomb has played trombone and euphonium since his school days. He started playing traditional jazz with the Dew Drop Inn Dixieland Jazz Band, whilst surrounded by veterans such as tubist Elmer Tuchhoff, banjoist Ken Farnsworth, reedman Bob Kennedy, stride pianist Ken Kennedy and steel guitarist Wanda Kennedy. He currently plays trombone with the Barrelhouse Jazz Band and sits in with other local groups, including Blue Bone Express, Mission Gold and And That's Jazz... ....Ken Newell- Trumpet:.... Ken has played the trumpet since his school days. He leads the South Bay Traditional Jazz Society Parade Band He also plays lead trumpet in Jazz 4 You and the Alameda College Small Ensemble Jazz Group... ....Marj Scooros- Washboard:.... Washboard Marj has been a lover of Dixieland Jazz most of her life. She plays many instruments - dulcimer, guitar, piano, ukelele - but none of them belong in a trad jazz band. Washboard is an early rhythm instrument for trad. When drums were unavailable, anything that could be used for rhythm was used. Remember the pots and pans we used as kids to drive our folks ‘round the bend? Over the last few years, Marj has collected, combined and cobbled her washboard. She figures it’s easier than hauling a drum set around. a... ....Leslie Thorne- Bass:.... Leslie is a reformed engineer. SHe is currently exploring various musical interests, including traditional jazz. We are delighted to have Leslie join our group, as she keeps us honest (at least as far as our tempos are concerned!).. ....Auxiliary Members.... ....Will Pratt:.... A long-time afficianado of traditional jazz, Will grew up on the Eat Coast, where his uncle led a traditional jazz band. Will plays banjo, guitar and occasionally can be persuaded to vocalize, though he normally rpefers to leave the singing to his lovely lady Kathleen. Will is a recent relocatee to the San Francisco Bay Area and currently leads the Emperor Norton's Jazz band out of San Francisco. .. ....Hudi Brenman:.... An scientist by profession, Hudi is a trained musician, who has recently begun playing traditional jazz. What he may lack in repertoire knowledge he more than makes up for with musicianship. Hudi currently holds the clarinet/saxophone chair in Will's Emperor Norton's Jazz Band and subs with various other groups...
