I found myself intrigued by the songs and the production. These guys are quite good, and listening on headphones was kind of a treat, as there is good ‘ear candy’ there. I liked the changing textures and the percussion and it really held my attention.

The band Turnip Greens was formed by four friends and was based on their common interest in music from southern Louisiana and New Orleans. The band has released three albums: "Crosseyed Cat" on Cope Records, "Come Around" on LongLife Records and "Carry me down the Aisle" with the Dutch label Black and Tan Records.
Way back in the South, turnip greens were considered a simple daily fare for the countryside folks. This simplicity is also to be found in the music of Turnip Greens.
We like to keep things rough and simple, states guitar player Peter Skjerning and describes the music as second line beat, or a bit like the sound of a handful of gravel in an empty barrel. Vocal harmonies play an important role in the Turnip Greens universe as well.
With a repertoire full of original material Turnip Greens are making their way into the Rock Roots and Blues music tradition of the US.

Tilbage i 2006 blev danske Turnip Greens kontaktet af det hollandske pladeselskab ’Black and Tan records’. Hollænderne havde hørt bandets plade, ’Come Around’, og synes så godt om den, at de tilbød en kontrakt. Det samarbejde resulterede i pladen ’Carry Me Down The Aisle’, der blev indspillet på to dage i et studie i Holland. Lyden blev støvet og krassende, og pladen fik forrygende omtale:

Turnip Greens har siden spillet på festivaler i Østrig, Frankrig, Tyskland og på den store ’Blue Balls’ festival i Luzern i Schweiz. Det er også blevet til masser af engagementer på klubber i ind- og udland - bl.a. som backingband for den amerikanske sangskriver og roots-guitarist, Seth Walker - og på legendariske spillesteder som Rock’n Bowl, Old Point Bar og Circle Bar i New Orleans.
Det traditionelle roots/blues miljø har med andre ord et godt øre til Turnip Greens. Men bandet har mod på meget mere. Musikken skal bredere ud – også uden for roots/blues miljøet.
Viljen til at nå bredere ud maser sig også op af rillerne på Turnip Greens kommende. Her har bandet arbejdet med produceren Jakob Meyland, som tidligere har produceret for Jokeren, Mani Spinx og Bronson Brothers.
Sammen har de fundet ind til kernen af det, Turnip Greens er så gode til: at tilføre en amerikansk og ofte meget traditionsbunden musikgenre et særligt skandinavisk og moderne touch. Resultatet er rå, skramlet og hip roots-musik.

Og hvad betyder det så - navnet? Jo, ude på landet i de varme og fugtige amerikanske sydstater, er turnip greens en fattigmands-ret baseret på majroe. En spise som efter sigende skal koge det meste af en dag for at blive rigtig god.
Måske bliver den også hip en dag?…
