Turn it Up is the flagship music development project of Fleet Arts and has delivered considerable outcomes and benefits since it’s launch in February 2003. Offering a range of workshops, skills development and opportunities for performance for young people across Derbyshire to develop and expand their contemporary music skills, Turn It Up is proving to be an unqualified success.
Turn It Up encompasses a wide range of developmental activities which include the following:
* Rock School - workshops taking place within schools, youth clubs and community groups, offering young people and bands with some musical experience the opportunity to develop those skills, write new songs and music and even record their work.
* Gigs, Performances and Promotion - bands are given opportunities to perform in public at a wide range of events and venues including the E:Merge festival at Shipley Park, small scale venues across Derbyshire and at the Assembly Rooms in Derby.
* Progression Programme - participants can go and develop their experiences, learning about all aspects of the music industry including marketing, promotion and business skills and gain experience and knowledge for their own careers and future development.
The Turn it Up programme is led by Julian Butt and all project leaders have considerable experience in the music industry and many of whom are currently performing and writing their own music, in addition to teaching.
What Turn it Up offers is the opportunity for young people to learn and develop their skills in a different aspect of music, not traditionally catered for within formal education. Rather than playing casually in garages and bedrooms, participants are given the chance to work on their music with expert guidance and encouragement and given performance opportunities they simply would not have without such a programme.
By engaging the young people involved at their level and with a subject area that means something to them, Turn It Up has increased the confidence of the young people involved and increased access to live music across Derbyshire for performance and audiences alike.
This year Peak Promotion have organised a Battle of the Bands competition in conjunction with Y-Not Festivals. The winner of the final an open-air event (details to be announced soon on www. ynotfestivals. com/battle) where the winner will open this years Y-Not Festival on the 1st of August!
If you're on Facebook, join the BOTB group and RSVP on events here!
