Turn off the Sun

Biog

It’s not about egos, or satisfying personal agendas. Or living up to whatever force-fed fashion conscious bullshit niche is on the radio that week. It’s not about dress-sense or musical aptitude. And it’s definitely not about money.

It’s about sending hearts racing, limbs flying. It’s about making you want to dance/fight/procreate. It’s about making you reconsider what it is that you get your kicks out of. Making you relate and feel like there are people in this world who feel like you do. It’s about playing each live show like it’s your last, combining melodies that pull you in and words that keep you there. With hearts firmly on sleeves and feet planted to the ground. Number one rule – it’s all about conveying emotion through music.

Turn off the Sun are an Alternative Rock band formed in 2009 in Birmingham, selected highlights so far include:

In the last two years we have played packed-out shows in the best venues all over the Midlands and London, sharing the stage with some of the countries hottest bands in the process.

In 2009 we had the honour of having one of our tracks, ‘Weekend in Prague’ aired on the legendary BBC Radio 6’s ‘Fresh on the Net’ show on several occasions, and can count respected 6Music DJ Tom Robinson as a fan. The same track, along with other tracks from our first EP received widespread airplay on radio stations as far as Japan, USA and Canada, as well as all over the UK.

Our track ‘Lay that ghost to rest’ is currently being used on a promotional video for well-know international brand Halfords, which appears on their website as well as featuring at road shows all over the UK.

Our Keys player Helen has collaborated on two tracks with Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics.

In October 2010 we travelled to Valencia in Spain for four days to record our 3rd EP. ‘Montesa’ has received fantastic reviews and has continued our presence on radio shows all over Europe and beyond.

The band have performed at several festivals, including Birmingham Artsfest.

We have recently filmed a music video for our next single ‘Walking Wounded’, which stars former world champion kick-boxing legends Matt and James Winsper.

Feedback

"Sharp guitar playing, tight, driving drums and raw, passionate vocals. Birmingham band Turn off the Sun take no prisoners. They have all the hallmarks of a really storming live band."

Tom Robinson - BBC Radio 6

"This is modern, exciting and every now and then you catch a whiff of what it would have been like if the Foo Fighters had been angrier, edgier and louder. It’s the sort of music that would see arms, legs and hair flailing wildly, joyously and out of control in a sweaty room."

"This is Fantastic! This band are just first class, we really, really love them. Quality, track."

Andrew Marston - BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester Introducing

“A skilful mix of memorable melody, weapons-grade alternative rock guitar, subtle synth lines and a dynamic rhythm section, the four songs within are genuine contenders for breakthrough…..The squally yet melodic guitar lines that colour each song are more akin to Foals, The Cribs or perhaps on occasion Johnny Marr’s earlier incarnations. In other words, well worth listening to. The insistent bass lines and frenetic drumming provide a solid and essential foundation that help build the raw, heart-on-sleeve whole and make it so captivating across it’s 13 minutes. Adding the finishing touch are washes and waves of synth that demonstrate that Turn Off The Sun are constantly in service to their songs, adding as they do essential meat to the bones, rather than overwhelming any given track.”

"‘Let The Right One In’, ‘Cardiac’ and ‘Embers’ have intensity and while they do not bear an instantly obvious commercial sound, the more you hear these songs the deeper they imbed themselves into your head. If captured at the right time any one of these numbers has the ability to take Turn Off The Sun on to the next level of their musical career."

"Raw energy, talent and enthusiasm make Turn Off The Sun a great band who produce no frills alternative is this that sets them apart from other bands creating similar sound and will take them on to success."

.. "Turn Off The Sun really took the stage by storm, also playing in a pop-punky style but with a much harder rock edge to their sound. They were bloody loud too! But nonetheless, I was blown away by Turn Off The Sun’s loud and rockin’ set..."

"...very hi octane guitar fuelled ferocity..."

Bugbear Promotions, June 2010

“Turn off the Sun are solid, tight and masters of their music. If you need great, driving music from a band that is grounded and has solidarity to their tunes then look no further. I know great music when I hear it, and this is great music. Andy Crawfords vocals are rounded and bold yet delicate where they need to be. He really knows how to deliver his message with vigour and passion. Great music and I would wager live they’re something else”

"Each tune is a driving force and has been written fantastically. Turn Off The Sun thrive at what they do live, it is a real pleasure watching a band play hard and give off so much energy, and having fun doing it. You can tell the moment the lights dim, and the 4 count on the sticks is behind them, Turn Off The Sun are in their element and are bringing there "A" game."

Head to bbc.co.uk/introducing, upload your music and you could have your tracks broadcast on BBC Radio
"After the first 30 seconds you can’t help but feel like you’ve somehow stumbled into a storming house party at its height. You look around and people are rolling around on the floor, a couple are getting off in the corner and a tramp on meth is screaming into your face. Needless to say, you are perfectly sober and wondering what the hell is going on. It takes this first 30 seconds to get your bearings at the Turn off the sun party but once you accustom yourself to the relentless pace you find yourself becoming a part of what turns out to be an awesome little shindig."
