TURN PALE is a band, from Bloomington, Indiana, seeking to explore the corners of the dancefloor, within a decidely punk asthetic. We opt to caress a dark, Rough Trade sound from the early 80's post-punk movement. Darkness does not necessitate evil.
TURN PALE equals approximately 3 parts Factory, 1 part 4AD, 1 part Mute.
"Turbulent, striking post-punk that remains uptempo and danceable (think: THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, VIRGIN PRUNES, THE POP GROUP, PiL). Lockstep, bass-heavy midtempo rhythms anchor piercing guitar chords and drones, all accented by an unhinged vocal performance. " - Temporary Structures
"A plain-clothes group of musicians that coin a style reminiscent of The Birthday Party and Joy Division, I was psyched to hear something so raw and genuinely inspired by the old school produced from a new band" - Starvox
TURN PALE was formed in summer of 2000 by Pete Schreiner (bass), Marty Sprowles (drums), Nick Quagliara (guitar) and Michael Anderson (vocals).
The self-released "Winter EP' kicked things off in late 2001, followed by the 'CHANCE' 7" in April 2002 (Bluesanct), and TURN PALE's debut full-length, entitled "KILL THE LIGHTS", released in June 2003 (What Else? Records).
Pete left the group shortly before the release of the album, and Chris Lombardi joined on bass in April 2003.
Known for a highly energetic and chaotic live show, TURN PALE has toured the US several times over the years with friends such as BLACK EYES (Dischord), LOVE LIFE (31G) and RADIO BERLIN (Action Driver).
The 'FILMS WE LIKE' 7" was issued in May 2004 on RUFFIAN RECORDS out of DC. TURN PALE then took a sabbatical from touring to work on material for their second full-length.
Many memorable local performance and three years later, this album, entitled "MOCK TRIAL / HUNG JURY", was released in Feb 2007 on DUCHESS ARCHIVE out of NYC.
2008 saw the final release of 'Shameless Kiss of Vanity' on RELEASE THE BATS out of Sweden. A Cure tribute presenting covers of the entire 'Pornography' album in order, it features TURN PALE's version of 'A Short Term Effect'.
As of 2009, TURN PALE is still an active band, if landlocked. A yet-untitled third album is being finished. No release plans are worked out, so if you are a label interested in releasing TURN PALE, please contact the band.
TURN PALE is also finishing up a DVD, collecting three tour documentaries produced by band drummer, Marty Sprowles. Beginning with their tour with LOVE LIFE in 2002, up through the last few shows in 2005/2006, this DVD will give an overview of TURN PALE's trademark live show, in addition to clips of tour mates such as BLACK EYES, LOVE LIFE, FROSTIVA and more... stay tuned!
Due to geographic difficulties, TURN PALE unfortunately does not play live or tour for the time being.
