Turnstiles debut record never should have happened. But hold your proverbial horses right there. Thats not to say that its a bad record. Far from it. Still, the truth of the matter is that from the very outset, the odds were stacked well against the possibility of these Moncton lads ever putting much of anything down on tape. And so, while the bookies eat their words, grab yourself a little something to tide you over and read on Throughout high school, Jesse, Olivier, Pete, and Shane found respitefrom the angst, acne, and various other alliterative actualities of adolescencein the form of music. Through an assortment of band name and lineup changes, the boys never really aspired to anything beyond playing assemblies, coffee houses, and perhaps the occasional car show. Upon returning from their first year of post-secondary, however, something wondrously inexplicable (or inexplicably wondrousor both) happened: They just kind of, umm, kept going. Now fast-forward to the summer of 2005. Still spending most of their time scattered in various cities throughout the Maritimes, the four convene on weekends, desperately learning new tunes and working out arrangementsoften only days before studio time is booked. Nevertheless, with the Right Honourable former-Superfriend Charles Austin (credits: Buck 65, Matt Mays, Joel Plaskett) at the helm, the band now known as Turnstiles (drawing their name from a Neil Young song) work well into the fall completing the recordall the while, keeping up with their fourth-year university workloads. After mixing and mastering, at long last Turnstiles manage to release 13 Telephone Towers; just in time to ring in 2006.And what does the year aught-six hold for Turnstiles? CBC Radio 3 suggests that The maturity of their sound would indicate that these musicians have been in the business all their lives. We suspect Turnstiles will be thee band of 2006! Indeed, both the quality of songwriting and the level of sonic experimentation on their debut certainly belies their age. From Grandaddyesque space-pop to Beatlesque piano-pop, Turnstiles churn out often-danceable rock songs with intrigue and charm (Dalhousie Gazette) which arelike those of Wilco, the Band, or the Rheostaticsas much rooted in tradition as they are entangled with exploration and innovation. Three songwriters strong, the group covers a whole lot of ground on 13 Telephone Towers, making for a damned impressive debut. Arguably as damned impressive as the fact that it ever got made in the first place...

That sucks that your drummer is so far away. All is well over here. We're playing some shows here and there. We're also doing a fair bit of recording. We'll be doing a lot of touring in the spring and summer though. Hopefully we can play another show together. If you come as far as SK make sure you play in Saskatoon! take care.

And one more thing....
I've been listening to Neil Young's "On the Beach" album a lot lately and I'm curious to know if you got your name from his song "For the Turnstiles"? He'd be happy...or extremely mad, I don't really know Neil Young...
