"What can I tell you about Turrentine Jones that I haven't already told you?
I could try telling you that the Manchester three piece are set to change the way you see that particular cities music, but I've already told you that. I could mention their enigmatic front-man Jude Neville and his eye-squintingly skuzzy blues guitar, but you already know all about it. I could mention the fact that talented sticksman Chris Carcamo used to bang the tubs for cult local act The Children, but it wouldn't be news to anyone paying attention. If I told you that Thom Scotson's serenely moody organ fills the hole more usually plugged by a bass guitarist like hand fits (particularly snug) glove, I'd just be repeating myself." - Winston's Zen
Turrentine Jones is being touted as a challenger for the modern blues crown, having already appeared on ITV4 and had their praises sung by The Guardian, Radio One DJ Zane Lowe and Q magazine.
Given the furore, you could be forgiven for thinking that the trio are already several releases into their recording career, but Midnight Wings, a download-only release on May 14, is in fact Turrentine Jones’ debut single. It has already been playlisted at Radio One on the B list and Radio Two on the C list.
TJ’s manager Brett Vale says the reaction so far to the single has surprised him. “The expectations around this single from our point of view were not huge, although we obviously think it’s a great bit of music.
“It’s amazing how well it’s done in terms of being picked up by press and radio. It’s really just a brief introduction, before their first single is released next January.”
Turrentine Jones is the brainchild of Australian guitarist Jude Neville off the East Coast’ and drummer Chris Carcamo of The Children. While the duo started off moonlighting soul classics, their creation soon became something comparable to a kindof Junior Kimbrough meets the Stooges, or a Terry Reid trio. Integral to their current sound is the organ work of Thomas Scotson. While ably filling out the band's low end with a foreboding drone he manages to contribute striking, solo harmonies that push Turrentine Jones to another level entirely.
Turrentine Jones’ debut EP The Empty Bottle That Was Desire is available now to download.
Good seeing you other night, shame about the short set and sound man but still enjoyable. I'm out Friday 20th Nov for a r'n'b/blues/soul night at the Ruby Lounge if you fancy it.
