M. ARFMANN / TURTLE BAY COUNTRY CLUB
Matthias Arfmann was born in the Northern German City Bremen. His first Band Project, Kastrierte Philosophen with singer Katrin Achinger became a famous underground Band. Focusing on fastidious German experimantal Popmusic, inventing Live-Remixing techniques in the early 80s, the Kastrierte Philosophen did 13 LPs on different Labels between 1984 and 1996. Meanwhile Arfmann built his first Studio in a parking garage in Hamburg St. Pauli, the legendary Knochenhaus. With the arising of the Hamburg Hip Hop Sound in the middle of the 90s, the Knochenhaus became the first Adress for Hip Hop Artists like Absolute Beginner, Patrice and Jan Delay and Independent Musicians like Cora E., Fishmop, The Workshop, Kreidler, Seeed, Yello, Avantgarde Cellist Charles Curtis or the old generation musicians from the Krautrockszene like Lothar Maid from Amon Düül. He produced more than 100 Albums in the Knochenhaus, until he moved to a new studiobuilding in the subburbs of Hamburg.
In the little Village Neuenfelde he founded the Turtle Bay Country Club, a loose collective of musicians and artists from all over the world. Discovering the Soundphilosophy of Dub, the electronic Version of Roots Reggae music, the Turtle Bay Country Club became famous with the releases M. Arfmann presents Turtle Bay Country Club (1999), Dub Decade (2002) and his last release Universal Monstershark (2004). Presenting the artists Tony Cook, former drummer of James Brown, Mahmoud Gania from Marokko or Jamaikan Singer Mike Brooks and many others, soon a Film Team was on the trace of Matthias Arfmann, travelling through the world to get in contact with the artists for his records. The documentary Film Input/Output about his projects will be premiered during a litte german Tour in April 2005. Producing Remixes and Albums for Major Record Companies, Matthias Arfmann became a Nr. 1 Producer for Youth Radio and Popular Music Producing Szene in Germany.
The actual project Recomposed became a major musical challenge for Matthias Arfmann. The musical interpreteation of one of the greatest German conductors of the last century, Herbert von Karajan and the commission of the major Label for classical music, the Deutsche Grammophon, became a nobility for Matthias Arfmann, who still is a strong idealistic worker in the musicbusiness. Seeing his chance, to do his own interpretation of the great composers Dvorak, Rimskij-Korsakow, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Tschikowsky a.o., he was deeply thrilled by the possibilities of the meeting of modern Audio technology in contrast to the complexity of the 18th/19th century music. The result is a deeply emotional, timless valid electronical interpretation of the musical content of the early and late romantic aera in eastern and western Europe.
The release in May 2005 was followed by an intense Touring through Europe in June 2005 with a mixture of Club/Dub-Musicians, Classical Intruments and the Voice of rising Star Onejiru, singing her Version of the Symphony "From a New World" by Antonín Dvorák. In 2007 Arfmann will perform his classic DUB Album with The FILMORCHESTER BABELSBERG in Potsdam/Germany.
