DENNIS SCHRECK, MY BEST FRIEND. MAY 8TH, 1950 - JULY 2ND, 2009. REST IN PEACE.
Dennis Schreck, my best friend; a real man's man, a role model, a teacher, a friend, a farmer, a carpenter, a developer, a mentor, a father, a husband, a visionary, a man who spent his life in the service of others, and a simple man, not so much concerned with pomp and appearances, but concerned more with substance and accountability, often speaking of tolerance and compassion, for Dennis believed that everyone had something to offer, something to bring to the table. He believed that small changes often net big results, and that through self-expression with the arts that global connection could be achieved, and so Dennis and Bill Prochnow bought the ElPaso Depot in ElPaso, IL, and converted it into a safe-haven for musicians, poets, painters, actors, and many other types of artists. All of this began Dennis's mission of world connection, through the arts, at the community level. Remember, small changes often net big results.
Dennis was one of God's faithful, and although he often spoke of his faith he did not always wear his faith on his sleeve, he proved it by example and by trying to improve the human condition of all those he came in contact with. Does that remind you of anyone? Dennis was a wonderful father and husband. In the many years that I was close to Dennis, it was obvious to me that even with all of Dennis's endeavors, aspirations, and goals, that his main focus in life was the well being of Pam, Jerry, Tony, Crystal, Ben, and the rest of his family and friends. One of the last thing Dennis did with his life, even after becoming ill, was to mentor a teenage boy in Champaign, IL. who was having trouble in school and at home. He took the boy to Tae Kwan Do, class, and spent time with him several times a week, and within a short amount of time he helped this young man improve his life and lead him in a new direction down a path that should lead to success.
Right to the end, Dennis's concerns were of other people's feelings and well being. I am certainly a better person for knowing Dennis and being around him made me want to be a better person. I loved Dennis like a brother, I will miss him dearly, and I will surely think about him everyday for the rest of my life. Dennis, you were a real class act. |
