Brian's Interests
|
| General | Cooking, computers, gardening, good books. I have also been known to make beer. | | Music | Eclectic. My choice of genres tends to include Classic rock, Adult Album Alternative, 80s music, jazz, classic soul, that sort of thing. I respect but do not enjoy hip-hop. I cannot stand soft rock or bubblegum. | | Movies | I'm not a big movie person. When I do watch one, it either tends to be something off the beaten path that a friend dragged me to (Wicker Park with Josh Hartnett being one weirdly enjoyable example) or a well-known quote movie like Office Space or The Big Lebowski that I might not have seen. That said, my favorite movies are all pop SF -- the first Matrix, Star Trek:First Contact, and the original Star Wars trilogy (special edition). It is required of everyone that they sit through the entire original Star Wars trilogy at least once in their life. Han shot first. | | Television | There is life outside the Food Network, and it's called Mythbusters. | | Books | My favorite genre seems to be cookbooks, and after that humor books. Cookbooks are especially great when they get either really geeky or really historical, and humor books are interesting just by virtue of their topicality and ephemerality. | | Heroes | The great geeks of food, science, humanism, and computers, James Randi and Julia Child above all. Honorable mention to Linus, dmr, ken, Alton, and the entire crew of Cooks Illustrated magazine. |

I do some volunteer work in community television, and I know my way decently well around both a camera and a mixing board.

I'm kind of a mixed bag -- I've done some work in Perl, I've worked a help desk, and I can troubleshoot a PC. My OSes of choice are MacOS (Classic and X) and Linux.
