SKINWELL-TUNNELS-REVIEWS:

TEXTURA
On Skinwell's Tunnels, Christian Corvellec and Martin Dumais serve up an hour-long exercise in industrial ambient-noise dronescaping, with the emphasis more on the ambient than noise side of the equation. “Orcvent” proves that the two are eminently capable of working up an apocalyptic roar when the mood strikes, but the track eschews the harrowing screech of a prototypical Merzbow assault for something less obliterating. Likewise, the cyclonic “Theodolite” churns relentlessly for nine minutes without ever reaching a pain-inducing pitch. Dumais (multi-slab processing, analog melodic extractions) and Corvellec (initial templates and layers, digital processing) ensnare the listener with cycling patterns and machine-like pulsations, much of it smothered in foggy textures and gnarly noise. A steady pitch of controlled squalls and unearthly industrial rumble opens “Floor” but gradually a bruising, indomitable throb moves to the forefront to eventually overpower the other sounds. In “Dissiminate,” a careening ghost-like specter hums at the center of cyclonic thrums and ear-piercing pitches, while the comparatively gentler “Fissionned” stretches its piano-like streams through softly crackling whooshes of static and hum as synthetic swoops ring out in the distance. Skinwell saves its deepest plunge, “Grim Coast,” for last, at which point the duo works up a steam-shop factory sweat for a good seventeen minutes. Though Tunnels is the first musical outing on disc for Christian Corvellec, that's hardly the case for Dumais who has been involved in Montreal's electronic and experimental music scenes for the past two decades (his current psych-drone project, AUN, has released three CDs on the Montreal-based Oral imprint and one on Crucial Blast in the US).

HEATHEN HARVEST
Too often we hear about the term “hypnotic” while it lapses a certain musical decantation. Some genres are more susceptible to suffer this cataloguing, or at least this association, mind you: Industrial and Ambient generally. Nevertheless more than one from these examples presented in many bands serves a shallow association; hypnotic states are taken frequently in, just for the sake of dulling the listener, to submit him into an empty trance that leads no traces in memory about the music whatsoever. A shallow implant that recurrently induces sleep and a typical boredom and remains next to the irremediable ejection of the cd out of the player and into the case, forever buried in oblivion. Music should prevail amidst its effects, as art itself it should give supreme importance to the memory it does construct on the listener and the legitimacy that it does guarantee with its aesthetic.

skinwell is a surprising example of this aspect. Industrial having a meeting with Drone Ambient and leaving a hypnotic halo behind it, just like a spectre. A strange apparition indeed, in these days where so many have succumbed into the easy path of repeating other’s people work or have fallen in the common grounds that define the orthodoxy from a genre. “Tunnels”, first album issued by the Canadian duo conformed by Martin Dumais and Christian Corvellec refuses to categorize their work as their music is certainly different in many aspects, first because its form differs from the great majority of Industrial/Dark ambient ensembles, clearly defining a personality and a sound of their own and second because their content certainly remains uncategorizable in its own terms, only allowing us to perceive the shape of an industrial background that could remit us to the old school noise and a marginal factory ambience while their structures allow space on certain post rock sonority that leads to a concrete amplitude in terms of sonority. Spacious, nebulous, industrialized and ultimately charged with a power that submits into a perfidious trance.

Now imagine the dense guitar power chord performed by mid period Swans empowered by amplification and brutally layered in a continuous mass of stellar gas revolted with the harsh sound logic from machinery recorded from factories and engines serving the role of a strange rhythmic base, reminiscences from the noise efficiency that was familiar with Throbbing gristle and the immediacy with a machine like logic close to SPK explorations comes to mind also. The relentless guitar buzzing erupting from the speakers sounds as the vibration from a huge electric power plant, acquiring different tonalities and textures, continuously morphing its shape in an reverberating madness overdrive that ultimately sparks static energy over the listener’s mind.
Main instrument is put at the service of atmospheric noise and ambient textures; the guitar input is distorted to the point of disfiguration by creating a colossal barrier of drone layers that share a dual tonality, conforming a continuous buzz of high and low pitched drones reverberating immensely, creating a whole world of sound alien to its own, an atmosphere that is both intimidating and ecstatic, contradictorily stony and gassy structurally speaking. Its absorbing sonority induces strange landscapes, ranging from ever working machinery like forms to space like travels and dimensional mind trips. Rhythmic section is established by the murmur of the drone, rambling incessantly and defining a perceptible pulsation that ultimately conforms the rhythm, other times the background crowded with machine rumours and systematic clanging takes prevalence.

This is very intriguing music, not quite derived from the realization of its contents which are ominous and extremely powerful but for the images and landscapes it does summon. Rather simple in concept, the music presents an over eloquent insight that captivates with inductive mesmerism, a trance that results of an unfathomed deepness and more extravagant aural exploration.

skinwell will not leave it there, I’m sure they will come back with more after “Tunnels” and presuming the future quality their works will have in comparison with the one we had here it will be as intriguing, intensely hypnotic and captivating as this experiment was. skinwell acknowledged the aural essence from hypnosis and with its visionary industrial music they have created a sound of their own and truly an aural trance in the true meaning of the word. We will be waiting for their comeback.

TOUCHING EXTREMES
Domesticated daydreaming is not enough for Skinwell, the duo of Martin Dumais (multislab processing, analog melodic extractions) and Christian Corvellec (initial templates and layers, digital processing). The colorful credits notwithstanding, the planning of Tunnels is merely essential: short segments of sonic uneasiness and acidic transiency get meshed, extensively stretched and devitalized to produce soundscapes whose stagnant temperament reveals instead lots of inside movements. The practically unrecognizable substances utilized to reach the desired levels of angst sound compact, markedly unkind, in a way illuminating on reality: these tracks depict a human race on its last legs, the worst aspects underlined by an ceaseless gloominess. We find no silly optimism, no openings to a better future, no blue skies: a deadpan elaboration of sufferance recited by ill-fated souls inhabiting lands where glitter is prohibited.

Despite the pronounced pessimism, the conscious listener is going to accept these bulletins of distress without a problem, and the repetition of this experience is recommended to help disemboweling the corpse of your inhibition. Call it “advanced post-industrialism of the third kind” - or upsetting ambient, should you choose a low-level playback. Not suitable to seekers of fatuous peacefulness.

CONNEXION BIZARRE GOTHTRONIC
.Angle.Rec. is one of those labels that doesn't stop being intriguing. Somehow they just keep on finding the hidden treasures and well-kept secrets and they offer them a chance to be heard. In the past we've been able to hear for example The Missing Ensemble, Grkzgl, LCEDP, Nos Royaumes and Vromb, and with this latest release from the new project Skinwell ... Another secret door has opened to a realm from where we never heard of before.

Skinwell is a project from the for me unknown Christian Corvellec and Martin Dumais, who we know of Aun (releasing mostly on Oral). The result is a tension filled combination built from heavily manipulated layers. Sounds which origin leaves a lot of room to be discussed, at other moments heavy guitar-drone layers which bring back memories from Maeror Tri of the noisey output of Troum.

This is an album which does not have one boring moment, because every track has something different then the others. There is a lot of exploration to be done, which is one of those things of which I spoke earlier: That what makes an .Angle.Rec. release so specific.

The playtime of the first 7 (out of 8) tracks is between 4 and 9 minutes, which is a good length for the type of music (experimental guitar-ambient-noise). The last track however is the epic 16 minute 'Grim Coast', which is the least experimental, but it is a truly gorgeous ever developing drone.

With albums like 'Tunnels' you can only dream of living in Quebec and be confronted with this beauty day after day after ... Wait, hold ... You could also just order it!
