Back in the olden days—that's 1960, if you must know—a measly 6 percent of all plays produced in this country were penned by women.
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Holy Mother of Mamet! Thank goodness in this post-'Vagina Monologues' world, such Cro-Magnon man stats are ancient history!"
Right?
Wrong.
"Forty five years later and only about 20 percent of the plays produced are written by women. That's kind of alarming," says Women at the Door co-founder Elaine Rivkin.

About me: 20% Theatre Company Chicago was founded in 2003 by Elizabeth Schwan-Rosenwald and Abigail Boucher in response to Julie Baber's terrific creation of 20% Theatre Company; a company based in New York, NY dedicated to reversing the percentages of working women in the theatre.
Our Company members are Abigail Boucher, Liz Cooper, Jennifer Dobby, Nicole Gilman, Katy Hite, Elizabeth Schwan-Rosenwald, Sarah Ostman, & Lauren Van Kurin.
20% Theatre Company has affiliate branches in New York, NY and Minneapolis.
20% Chicago was inspired by 20% Theatre Company's mission, which it used as a basis to create its own mission found below.
20% THEATRE COMPANY is dedicated to strengthening the presence and raising public awareness of women artists in theatre. It is estimated that only 20% of theatre professionals are women. By providing educational opportunities for women directors, producers, designers, and playwrights, 20% Theatre Company strives to increase the number of women in theatre. We are committed to engaging new audiences by making our work accessible to the community.
