20 Stories High is a high energy show/dance band from Minneapolis with a repertoire of original music and covers. The original tunes are rooted in Rock, Blues, Reggae, and Country. We cover hits by The Beatles, Bon Jovi, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Maroon 5, Robert Palmer and more. Everything we play --whether original or cover – is for your dancing and listening pleasure.
20 Stories High began in 1984 as a song-writing collaboration between Tommy D and guitarist/vocalist Tom Northfield. Tommy D is a free-spirited, hyperkinetic soul with a knack for lyrics and ideas. Tom Northfield is the guitarist/vocalist and also the primary recording engineer & producer of the 20 Stories High recordings from his studio. His driving, melodic guitar style complements Tommy D’s ideas and together they’ve produced more than eighty songs.
The name 20 Stories High comes from Tommy D’s background as a union glazier swinging off the buildings downtown and climbing the big rocks on the weekends. The name also has a blue collar, workin’ man connotation that comes through in his lyrics about the struggles of life, love and work.
The other members of 20 Stories High include Jimbo Davis (bass guitar/vocals); Stephen Roemer (keys/vocals) and me, Dave Smith Jr., on drums. We back up Tommy D’s passionate lead vocals and his stage antics with signature vocal harmonies, dance rhythms and instrumental interplay.

Today's 20 Stories High lineup is taking the band to a new creative level. The band members include:
* Tommy D: Singer/Songwriter, Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Blues Harp and high energy front man with the stories.
* Tom Northfield: Lead Guitar and Vocal Harmony, Recording Engineer and Producer. Tom's melodic to hard edge guitar reflects 20 years of collaboration with Tommy D and gives the band a signature sound.
* Dave (Cuz) Smith: Wordsmith and straight ahead driving drums. He drives the band and keeps them rocking and dancing on stage. (Off stage he drives Tommy D "Off The Deep End"...but he's family.)
* Jimbo Davis: Bass and Vocal Harmony. Jim's high energy performance style, featured harmony vocals and antics make him Tommy D's sidekick on stage.
* Stephen Roemer: Keyboards and Vocal Harmony. Stephen would never tell you that he has music degrees from the University of Minnesota and the University of South Florida; he lets his fingers and his animated showmanship do the talking.
