FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Local promoters use poetry and music to bridge cultural gaps

Atlanta-----Nov 14, 2008----- This December, Atlanta audiences will be treated to a popular but under appreciated pairing--a poetry slam fused with visual art and a soul concert from indie music artists. International promotion groups, Below The Radar and Traxx Girls, will welcome national recording artist Eva Kennedy and quartet Gritz and Jelly Butter; Four young men with a following like the players at the old Cotton Club, to the Apache Café, the last Saturday in December during Rough Language VI-- a poetry slam featuring 12 of the top poets from across the country and a $500 cash prize, hosted by Queen Sheba.

This event will take place Sat Dec 27th at the old Ying Yang, the Apache Cafe, a staple for independent artists in midtown Atlanta and will feature music by Atlanta's new young voice that gives supporting vocals to mega recording star Kelis and many others; singer, songwriter, Soul Rocka Diva, Ericka Smith aka Eva Kennedy and three rounds of performance poetry judged by five guest judges including So-So Def A&R Dorma Davis.

This will mark the sixth installment of the Rough Language Poetry Slam series. In the previous events, poets also competed for a $500 cash prize as well as a chance to compete for the $1000 prize in March 2009 in Atlanta and ultimately a chance to perform at the Akoben Music Festival in New Orleans late next fall.

"We knew because of our presence in the local community we would get a certain level of attendance, but we were really shocked by how largely diverse the audience was becoming," said Below the Radar founder and member of the two time National Poetry Slam Champ Team, Slam Charlotte, Bethsheba "Queen Sheba" Rem. "This is our 10th year promoting, third in Atlanta and we felt this was the right time to push the envelope."

Sheba is not only a popular fixture on the nation's Spoken Word and Slam poetry scene, but highly loved and respected as a leader in the arts community by her peers. "She's extremely personable," said one audience member. "If she's performing or hosting, you feel like she's talking right to you. She makes everyone feel special. You leave the poetry slam feeling happy and motivated."

The Rough Language promoters, M. Scott from Traxx Girls, Inc., Carrie Y.T. Kholi and Bethsheba A. Rem from Below the Radar are planning for, not only this slam series Sat December 27th at the Apache but the wheels are already turning for the always highly anticipated Women's History Month show (held at the Apache earlier this year in March by Sheba) and the highly coveted $1,000 Poetry Slam in March 2009 which will feature Hidden Beach Recording Artist, Jaguar Wright, British phenomenon Julie Dexter and many other surprise guests! Location TBD

Below the Radar is a subsidiary company of Oya Xclusive International created in July 2001 by esteemed poet, writer and activist, Bethsheba 'Queen Sheba' Rem. Oya Xclusive is a one-stop booking agency, consulting firm and promotion/production company consisting of an all-star executive team of A&Rs, distribution and promotion representatives, grant writers, youth organizers, web and graphic designers, word-shop facilitators, fashion architects, business and tour managers, photographers and audiovisual specialists. Below the Radar is the event planning branch of Oya Xclusive and a large part of their mission encourages the growth of all artists, while booking and training subcontracted artists for performances around the country that may include but is not limited to hosts, singers, poets and emcees. Most recently Oya Xclusive has joined forces with promoters in Europe to invest in exposure for both UK and American poets.

This past summer, Traxx Girls, Inc. noticed the hustle in the Spoken Word game and decided that expanding their usual party scene and adding a more cultural event to their repertoire of club and after hour gametes would lengthen their, already clan like following, promotions reach. “Pairing with Queen Sheba brings some diversity to what we already do,” said Dj M Scott, Traxx Girls founder and CEO. “You can see her grind. She does what she says she will and continues to deliver. That’s what we look for when taking on new events. The first slam we partnered with Sheba at Pride last Aug was a success, we’re really looking forward to December’s show at the Apache and we’ve already been in talks about March.”

Based in Atlanta Ga, Traxx Girls, Inc delivers sleek and captivating events. Choosing the nations most noteworthy cities to showcase; Traxx Girls, Inc Entertainment has given women who love women a unique edge since April 2006. This funky-eclectic promotions group continues to ensure the ultimate night life experience while focusing their efforts on providing venues for the gorgeous women of the world, have enjoyed their new expansion to add cross culture events like poetry Slams and soul concerts to their mix. They emphasize fun and creativity as an alternative to the mundane club crowds.

Rough Language Poetry Slams are multi-layered and have something for the adult ADD in all of us. This will be a perfect Saturday night outing two days after Christmas.

Rough Language VI happens Saturday December 27th At the Apache Café 64 3rd St. 30303 Doors 8 Showtime 9:15 Sharp Eva Kennedy 9:30 sharp Poetry Slam jumps off 10pm Sharp

Company Bio

The name Oya was given to Queen Sheba from a Griot after a story telling session in a small bookstore in Norfolk early 2001. The brother was selling his business and moving back to Africa. Before he left he told the Queen Oya emanates Queen Sheba's ability to embrace change and keep going.

Oya, Yoruba Goddess of change, is now the name of an Xclusive Spoken Word recording label ran by her poetical highness, Queen Sheba. The Queen has started the first Spoken Word recording label in Virginia and has already belted five successful Spoken Word albums for her self, label-mates, and lending counsel and advise to other poets around the country in addition to selling in the 50,000 range in the underground alone. Her albums reflect the production genius of Patchwork Studios star engineer, Rock Icon Nick Chahwala lead singer of To Whom, Grammy Nominated producer Brian Sullivan, Jeffery Wheeler, International Slam Champion and poet/lecturer/producer/Spoken Word artist, Taalam Acey and new producer 13 of Nazareth in addition to DJ Rob well known producer in the Hip – Hop mainstream for his break beat club mixes and underground mix – tape success; and many others

With Sheba's strong community influence, awesome reputation for spearheading events, successfully booking Spoken Word artists and promoting the Spoken Word circuit around the world, her new business venture made a smooth transition into her own company. "It was an accident really," said the Queen when asked how she got started. "I was already doing it for about a year, then when I was lucky enough for someone to take me on an East Coast tour, I thought :there are hundreds of poets that don't know how or where to get the exposure, so now, I can assist them," she said.
Innovators are known for making it up as they go along. There was no sinking here, the Queen mastered the backstroke and has landed on the shore next to many successful record label owners. Earning her ranks and respect by attending music conferences such as Medim in Canne France, the Richmond, VA music festival, and several other arts and music conference to improve her marketing plan and music industry leadership.

Sheba's savvy business sense of the poetry circuit and trademark assertiveness, won her first business venture as a venue holder and business partner of one of the nationally recognized and highly visited poetry spots on the East Coast: Urban S.A.F.A.R.I, August 2000 turned The Underground. Queen Sheba took the once 30-40 person night and transformed it into a 200 person, standing room only event of the month. Poets from around the globe that once featured at The Underground have followed her move, in August 2005 to Atlanta, GA and now frequent whichever venue is luckier enough to have her host and promote their night.

Oya Xclusive took on the responsibility of starting Norforlk, VA's slam venue, Breath Control and a weekly Twisted Tongue Tuesday night in the heart of down town Norfolk at an upscale soul food restaurant. Then running, three venues, sponsoring a slam team, and three National Spoken word concerts a year, a publishing branch and booking agency, Oya Xclusive definitely etched it's name in thousands of households and hundreds of thousands of ears.

Since the birth of the label July 2001 and the highly demanded recording company has people from around the country bidding to be apart of the powerhouse staff. After careful planning and deliberate trial times, Oya Xclusive has formed the executive team of A&R representatives and distribution and promotions reps, grant writers, youth organizers and word-shop facilitators, and business managers, a thriving internship and volunteer department, Tour Manager, two web designers, and a graphic design team, photography division, fashion architects, a videographer team and audio and Queen Sheba of VA, now ATL as CEO.

With the growing talent in Atlanta, Oya Xclusive believes in supporting the growth of all artists and subcontracts artists for performances around the country within the booking agency to include hosts, singers and emcees. Most recently Oya Xclusive has joined forces with poets in Europe to invest in exposure for both UK and American poets. With Oya Xclusive officially going international in January 2005, there are plans for a London poetry venue and signing European poets to the label.

Artists now commission Oya Xclusive and its staff to facilitate and organize for not only upscale and alternative (to the mundane of the club crowds) entertainment, also political events, book signings and album release parties in addition to contracts for youth develop within the school system.

You do not want to pass up any opportunity to see what is coming from Oya Xclusive.

Poets

Poets march to different drummers
Different beats
Apart yet not apart
We sense the world in many colors, shades and words
We speak from the heart
Not just our hearts but, the worlds heart
We speak of unseen and seen
We feel the strings of the universe and play them like a guitar
One note at a time
Poets march to a different drummer with a different beat
Not just a 4/4 cadence
But beats that cannot be described
We hit a bass drum with so much force
While gently hitting the cymbals
We beat the conga drums
With a constant flow
Our words are like knives
To cut or defend
Poets march to a different drummers
We sit alone in contemplation
Seeking the hidden glory of GOD
Of Man
Of ourselves
Poets march to different drummers
But we stay true to ourselves

May loving light always be within and around you :o) Here is a poem I just wrote, entitled, Beloved, I Am ...

Beloved, I Am Yours
Wrap Your Wings Around Me
Unlock the Golden Doors

Share With Me Your Sweet Warmth
Of Paradise Within
And I Will Kiss the Light
That Glistens on Your Skin

Beloved, I Am Yours
Wrap Your Wings Around Me
Unlock the Golden Doors

Guide Me to the White Dove
Singing Her Song of Calm
And I Will Be the Streams
That Flow Between Your Palms

Beloved, I Am Yours
Wrap Your Wings Around Me
Unlock the Golden Doors

Hold Me Close, My Angel
Our Spirits Dance as One
Be the Love That Ripples
Into the Burning Sun

Beloved, I Am Yours . . .
