   About twofish

Way, way back in the last century (around 1991 to be slightly more precise) the 3 members of twofish hit the stage of the Joiners Arms in Southampton with some other musicians. We outnumbered the audience three to one. The previous act had been a thrash metal outfit who had entirely destroyed the speakers, and much of the rest of the pub’s equipment (though fortunately not the beer pumps). Our band, Paradox, struggled manfully (though not entirely successfully) with a bunch of pretty unfamiliar songs. Both members of the audience left before the end of the set…. Some time afterwards the band split, partly due to musical differences but also because of some logistical ones. The band’s members were variously located in Leicester, London and Southampton, which made finding a rehearsal studio pretty tough (although it was nothing compared to our most recent logistical problems).

Out of the wreckage of Paradox emerged a new band (at that point called Nurb. They spent quite a lot of time in the pub (drinking rather than playing). In 1995 they recorded a demo called Jungle Jim. It did pretty well, and was awarded "Top Tape" in Sound on Sound magazine. Some commissions followed including the soundtracks for a short animated film, "The Northern Line", which won a commendation in the 1998 BAFTA student film awards and "The Professionals", a documentary programme made by Carlton Television. The band also did some song writing and remix work with Siren of FXU records, and wrote a set of jingles for a hospital radio station including a news theme which, someone later pointed out, bore an unfortunate resemblance to the theme tune from BBC hospital drama "Casualty".

Between 1998 and 2000 the band members dedicated 2 days a week to writing music. When the money ran out they went back to having normal jobs in the computer industry, but not before changing their name to twofish (which they now intend to stick with) because they hadn’t had a name change for a while, and finishing their most recent demo which they called "The Uncertain Tea Principle".

After a longish break during which H went to California and Chuck went to Leicester, we've been back in the studio and writing again. Our first new track in five years, Radio Columbia, is now on the site.
