Roots-laced garage and jangly, guitar rock collide when Two Handed Engine’s music drops the proverbial hammer. The band operates out of a row home basement in Germantown; a neighborhood with a gritty, post-industrial vibe that runs right up next to the bucolic scenery of Fairmont Park. The contrasting environment creates a good analogy for Two Handed Engine’s music, which holds the rural, freewheeling influences of the Basement Tapes and early Wilco in tension with a harder, more urban sound found in bands like The Replacements and The Black Keys. As exhibited on the band’s first release, Good Misdeeds, their music is made for the bar, the highway, and for drinking on summer decks—possibly while watching the R8 train roll by as the boys often do on recording breaks.
Strict authenticity is not a concern for this power trio, who instead prefer to push the boundaries of American music, incorporating indie pop and guitar rock liberally. Lead singer Tim Moran sets warm, growling vocals to his often “call-to-arms” lyrics, and his fuzzy, hook-laden guitar work pairs up nicely against the Tennessee Two meets Bonham/Jones rhythm section of Joe Goodwill (bass), and Tom Mlcoch (Drums).
