Simon 'the burrell' is a born'n'bred londoner - in fact, he's ever left the road he was born on. Simon was, sadly, musically ignorant in his early age and 'Can We Fix It?' by Bob the Builder and a couple by those not-so-lovely Mis-teeq girls are songs that still scar his record collection today. Inspired by his wonderfully musically talented older brother, he took up the piano and then later the clarient - he hasn't really looked back since. At the tender age of 8 he bought his first proper keyboard, the DJX II, and so the pounding, pounding techno music started to flow. Simon has always kept one foot in classical music and is dedication can be seen when he spends five hours of his Friday playing in a jazz band and EYO (the local orchestra) - despite abuse from one so-called 'friend' - the irony of it all is that this 'friend' once spent a whole party glued to the TV watching the final of X-Factor. Simon is the only member of the group to be taking music GCSE and it is obvious to anyone who cares to look in the teachers markbook that he is the top of that class, with 100% in both the composition and performance parts of the course and top of the class in the listening assesment Simon has been earmarked as possibly the best in the country. From this it is clearly evident that he is the more musical of the two - though this is not really saying much as Joel regularly has to be told - "just press the white keys." Simon also has a keen eye for a good photo and the skills to take them and as well as taking photos for TimeOut magazine he is responsible for twotone's photography. The skills that Simon offers to the twotone table are always creative and gives the partnership hi-octane piano lines, soul-enthused strings, driving bass-lines and 'catchy-as-a fishing rod' riffs that are rarely found in the same track.
Joel Baker
Joel (aka talllankybaker) was born in Bath before making the best decision of his life so far and coming to London at the age of 5. Almost instantaneously the sites and sounds of ‘West5’ enticed Joel into getting into music and after a short while he had met up with Simon Burrell and the act was formed. Despite spending his early life in Bath, Joel had experienced quality music all his life. His father (the icon that is Jonny Baker) and his brother’s godfather (the inspirational John Birch) had, as is well known, been making life changing music as the internationally famous band ‘Jonnys in the Basement’ for years . Even to this day Joel names them as some of his biggest musical influences. It is unlikely Joel would have quite such a vast knowledge of drum beats, samplers and synths were it not for this contact he had with music in its rawest form from home at such a young age. Despite various attempts Joel has never learnt a traditional musical instrument finding them boring, which is hardly surprising when one considers his upbringing, yet this has not stopped his passion for making electronic music. He tried having lessons in this for a while but stopped fairly soon after starting when it became apparent he was the one doing the teaching. Joel now claims that he plays ‘the buttons’ and it is a common fact that he is responsible for some of twotone’s more electronica sounding tracks. It is even rumoured that fellow band member Simon Burrell often gets angry with Joel for ‘killing his tunes’. This is how far Joel is willing to go to get the sound and vibe he is looking for. Joel won’t be able to tell you anything about Mozart but I can tell you now, he’s responsible for many funky melodies more than most organ scholars in the world.
