An unassuming civil servant arrives on a tiny island in international waters to find that the quirky royal family living there has very big plans indeed—and he’s included.
His arrival couldn’t have been better timed. It’s Fifteen Island’s fifteenth birthday—reason enough for celebration—but the precocious Princess Sophia is turning fifteen as well. And fifteen, on Fifteen Island, is a special time for a woman …
Dreams are realized, and then shattered. Feasts are held. Love blossoms in unlikely places. There is much singing, occasional sleeping, and some shouting. And for Fifteen Island’s first official visitor, reality begins to fade, mingling dangerously with the Islanders’ peculiar brand of fantasy.
The King of Fifteen Island is a story based very loosely on the history of Sealand, an abandoned naval platform in the English Channel which was seized and declared independent by a family of British ex-patriots in the 1960s. Sealand exists today and continues to maintain its generally unrecognized independence. More information on the real Sealand is available at www.sealandgov.org.
The King of Fifteen Island is a play about national identity, power, and property. And about breaking the other guy’s neck before he breaks yours.
