About me:
I love.
I am just that simple. God, family, friends, children, and purpose.
This is my credo and I pray my epitaph.
God has invested alot in me and I want to make sure the investment pays off!
My passions are pursuing God's will, teaching, singing, performing, working out and learning.
Now more about me. Let's see, I am a singer/ songwriter/ producer/ entreprenuer. My songs have been recorded by a wide variety of artists with more soon to come. I have acted in plays, written dialogue, performed as voice talent in commercials and operated as a bandleader and frontman.
It has always been important for me to combine work and community service. In 1998, with the assistance of Bishop Bernard Clay, I formed New Inheritance Ministries in Atlanta, Ga. New Inheritance was formed out of my desire to reconnect with my son Tyler II after years of separation. I realized that many parents face the same hurdles in trying to repair familial breaches. So, New Inheritance began working with young African-American men to help them discover their potentials and understand their communal responsibilities.
The work of New Inheritance spead to Rochester, NY in 2004 when, after reconnecting with lifelong friend Derrick Coley, we lead a group of young men in weekly gatherings at my aunt Etheldra Owens' home and at James Madison School of Excellence. The group was profiled in a July 27, 2004 Democrat and Chronicle Newspaper article by staff writer James Johnson.
I also had the privelege of serving as a board member of the Rochester Fatherhood Resource Initiative, an agency which helps fathers and families promote responsible parenting. The RFRI has flourished under the leadership of Todd Williams and many other dedicated individuals from whom I have learned alot.
My band, The Tyler Owens Project has played for a great many functions over the last 4 years and is a favorite of those in the know.
In 2006, I came up with an idea that I hope will become a tradition. I went to the McQuaid Jesuit High School Alumni Director Mike Doser with a proposal for a concert that would help inner-city boys attend McQuaid. The resulting partnership produced the 1st Annual Smooth Jazz for Education Concert on April 29th 2006 at the Hogenkamp Auditorium. Google me at tyler owens rochester for more info.
