Tyree's Interests
|
| General | Life, The Universe, And Everything. Sex, drugs, and Rock-and-Roll--although at my age that would be a good night's sleep, extra oregano on the pizza, and the new age music station...
Okay, specifically: Writing a good story. Reading a good story. Music. Philately. Old coins. Rocks and minerals. Growing tomatoes and other vegetables--hey, at least I don't risk E. coli. Cooking, especially Oriental and Indian dishes. | | Music | I like the so-called Celtic sounds--Clannad, Loreena McKennitt, Enya--but lately have discovered some lesser knowns, such as Karen Marie Garrett, whose piano work is exquisite, and especially John Doan on guitar, and of course Mairead Nesbitt and the fiddle. Music is important to me when I am writing; I need something to set the background emotions. Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and Ghost, and the Chopin nocturnes are always helpful. But for driving around, nothing beats Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" -- the live version, of course! | | Movies | Or, as we American persons call them, "movies." I liked all three "Lord Of The Rings" because...well, what was there not to like? The same is true with all the 007 movies. But the real test of a good movie is, do you want to see it again? I liked "Lady In the Water" for its future hope, although the critics didn't care for it. But the ones that stick in my mind, still, are the Firefly series and Serenity. River Tam rocks! | | Television | Doctor Who is back! Hmm...what else? Eureka is tolerable. Heroes has some merit. Jake 2.0 is good but shows discouraging signs of devolving into a clicheed soap opera...time will tell. The Stargates are always good for background. House started out okay but, because his character is not developing, has become boring of late. Ditto Bones. Aside from that, and the weather channel, and the occasional unbiased news--good luck finding that!--you might as well save electricity. | | Books | Science fiction. Some fantasy. Some horror. I also like Ludlum, although his later works are just a bit too conspiracy-clicheed. Clancy is good, though he seems to have gotten a bit stale with the Jack Ryan character lately. Nothing with cookie-cutter characters and plots, such as Danielle Steel's crap.
Favorite sf authors would include Jack Vance, Charles Sheffield, Ursula K. LeGuin, Tanith Lee--especially her short works and her Hidden Books Of Venus--Heinlein, Asimov, Clark, Harlan Ellison, Robert Sawyer, Jack Williamson, me...
Recently discovered Mercedes Lackey, who spins a good yarn...
Non-fiction...well, I love a good history book. Medieval, Middle East, Roman. Stephen Hawking explains things well. Asimov's essays, of course. Discover Magazine helps keep me on my technological toes... |

Tyree's Blurbs |
About me:
A retired U.S. Army translator, I taught for three years, did post-graduate work in Chinese studies, and all the while wrote and wrote and wrote and finally turned rejection slips into acceptances. Since 1 January 2000, when my first story was published, I've had some eighty short stories and two novels published, and about two dozen poems, including a third-place Rhysling. I write primarily soft science fiction, some dark fantasy, and the occasional spooky horror.
I'm also the Managing Editor of Sam's Dot Publishing, which, if you're reading this, you should afterwards hie yourself on over to www.samsdotpublishing.com and check out our purchase center and buy something...preferably something by me, but we have lots of good reading material there in the Purchase Center.
