Urban Arts Base is an innovative creative arts program for young people experiencing mental health issues. UAB is a program of WAYS Youth Services and runs in partnership with the Prince of Wales Hospital. We provide a friendly, creative environment for young people aged 15-25.
The project works with artists, mental health support workers, volunteers and students from a range of backgrounds, to provide programs in visual arts, music, drama and creative writing. More recent programs have included photography and digital media, jewellery, drum and guitar tuition, ceramics, song-writing and recording, film, mosaic and painting.
Urban Arts Base aims to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental illness, and provides participants the opportunity to exhibit their work and get involved in community projects and special events.
Urban Arts Base is located in Double Bay. Catch a train to Edgecliff, then walk along New South Head road for 10 minutes. Or, catch buses 326 or 327 from Stand G at Bondi Junction Interchange and buses 323, 324 & 325 from the City and Eastern Suburbs.
The young people who have attended Urban Arts Base over the last few weeks have completed works to be displayed by the Woollahra Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra will perform on Sunday 17th June, 2007. The works shown below will be displayed as backdrops for the Orchestra.

Urban Arts Base relies on financial donations from members of the community and philanthropic trusts to remain running.
How can you help Urban Arts Base I hear you ask?
Your donations can assist Urban Arts Base with the following:
Support our Project Staff
Staff here at UAB plan, prepare, develop and facilitate workshops based on the needs and interests of our community's young people. They work hard to connect with the young people on every level and to engage them in new art or musical activities. Your support helps us to keep these amazing programs running.
Support our Artist in Residence Program
What better way is there to learn about painting, print making, photography, sculpture and a wide range of artistic skills that by working with an established artist. UAB aims to hire artists to work closely with our young people, and a donation of $1500 would keep this program running for an entire month!
Support Art Reach in the Community
We have all heard the term 'falling through the gaps' in relation to people missing out on mental health services. Art Reach is UAB's community outreach project and is all about finding young people who may be experiencing mental health issues, but who are not receiving all the support they need. This project aims to help find disconnected and disadvantaged young people and show them that there is somewhere for them to go. A donation of just $50 buys all the materials needed for one group.
Support Urban Arts Base
If you think that everything we do here at UAB sounds great, well, it is! If you are able to help out in any way, please give us a call as it would be greatly appreciated. Financial support, volunteers, technical assistance, computer experience...you name it. Anything you have to offer may be of help to us, so give us a call, we'd love to hear from you.
Bondi Blymp is back on Saturday 20 September at The Bondi Pavilion with a killer lineup including The Fecks, Heroes for Hire, Betty Boston and more. Hope you can make it!
Thanks for the feedback! We're trying to keep everything as up to date as possible. If you or any other young people would like to be involved please let us know.
hi emma, u asked about the profile. Well I was thinking that u can add some of our works, like photos of paintings, or animations, or even music on the home page. regards daria
