Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, Gov't Mule, Sun Ra, John Scofield, Black Sabbath, Derek Trucks Band, Primus, Miles Davis, The Meters, Rudder, The Bad Plus, Sun Ra, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd...and the list goes on...and on...
In the spring of 2006, several improvised jam sessions would cultivate what has become one of Nashville's most innovative and eclectic musical acts. Überphonics is not simply another instrumental trio to be lumped in with the typical "jam band" or "jazz combo" pseudonyms. Instead, the band strides to achieve a fresh sound that is accessible and pleasing to the everyday listener as well as the more discerning musician.
Adding to the Überphonics experience, the absence of a vocalist leaves the interpretation
of the music to the listener. Born and raised in three separate parts of the country,
Matt Jaggers (guitar), Kyle Greene (bass) and Carl Roberts III (drums), sought their destiny in the likely of musical havens, Nashville, TN. It was while working at the same music store that they met, and later, got together.
2007 proved to be an exciting year for the trio as they aggressively sought to saturate Nashville and beyond with their soulful, conversational blend of jazz, funk and rock. In addition to a growing schedule of noteworthy shows in and around Nashville, the band took their experience to Castle Studios in Franklin, TN, where they cut their debut album with Plaidstar Records. Simply titled Überphonics, this 10-track set is a concept album, but not by traditional standards. Instead, the trio strives to absorb the listener into an exploration of complete musical thought.
In 2008, Überphonics began booking shows that prove their versatility, from coffee shop houses and dive bars to mainstream festivals such as the Memphis in May Barbeque Contest. The group also gained local and regional attention, being featured in the Nashville Scene as a Critics pic as well as being featured in Relix magazine as a band on the Rise. With 2008 also came a change in personnel. With Greene’s decision to exit the group, Überphonics found solace in local funk-driving extraordinaire Big Taco.
The group now rejuvenated and firing on all cylinders, Überphonics has adopted a campaign to bring their music (now being described as junk-jazz) to the masses. The term junk-jazz, as the band tells it, is “a way to translate what we do to our audience. As there is not one single genre to drop us in, we made the decision to create our own.” Junk referencing aspects of jam and funk, and jazz being the improvisation that the band centers around.
Überphonics is a collective improvisational unit...where the key element to the music being played is the interaction among each player. Priding themselves on the live performance, The trio believes in the idea that every performance be unique and the audience can feed on the energy created by playing in the moment. So grab yourselves a towel, ‘cause this is gonna be a filthy ride!
Hey friends, just wanted to let you know about our show at 3rd & Lindsley tonight, May 23rd. We'll be playing with 2 great bands. The Steepwater Band from Chicago and Nashville's own Black Honey. The last time we played with Steepwater it was absolutely ragin', and I expect this one to be better. They're fresh off of a European tour and ready to rock. See y'all there.

“I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth." And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” Genesis 9 : 11 - 13
The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. Psalm 145: 18-19
