Ubyk is the brainchild of Russian born singer/songwriter Roman Bleum. The band's moniker, (pronounced yoo-bik) is derived from legendary sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick’s story of a homogenized world run by a powerful and ambiguous organization that owns, creates, and markets everything in existence.
Like Dick with his writing, Ubyk’s musical ambition is to bring the anomic state of the world to the forefront of the listener’s consciousness. Bleum’s soothing vocal delivery perfectly compliments the band’s simple musical elements (guitar, percussion, “secret weapons”) but neatly juxtaposes the cynical subject matter of his lyrics. Subtle build-ups, sound effects, and backing female vocals all come together to serve as an eerily relaxing vehicle to convey Ubyk’s haunting message.
The group performs as a two-piece with Roman and singer/songwriter Samantha Tobey sharing both vocal and multi-instrumental duties. Working together as a duo forces the band to embrace their limitations, and include only the elements necessary to support their concept of a “song”. As Ubyk is intent on recreating their recorded songs in a live atmosphere, they do not add any superfluous or arbitrary elements to their material. By simplifying the equation, the band has created a sound that is sweet, surreal, and psychedelic!
Ubyk has toured the South/Northwest in the summer/fall of 06 in support of their first EP "work".
The band has just completed recording of a new EP with producer Alex Newport which will be available for purchase and download in Jan!!!
Another great review! That's great guys! Miss you guys. Can't wait until we can all have pizza and play Nintendo again. Hopefully sooner than later. Take care.
dude i love your music, i never really gave it a listen till now. ive got too say. good stuff. i like it because its very artsy.. which i like. comment me back and ill have to pick up cd
i was just listening to yer song after hitting the bong and i swear i slipped into a time lapse...nobody dies in our world too...they just turn into different forms of energy and keep shining on....diggin it!
Now that's something I can really dig. Seems to have a strong Barret influence and I dare say even a hint of a Country Joe McDonald influence. Quite wonderful. Truly a fresh breathe of air in a world of sickly and otherwise bad sound.
That was some of the best new music I've heard in a LONG time. Very fresh, yet haunting and deep. Excellent, loved all 4 songs. Please keep us posted on an album and tour dates.
Yo dudes! It sounds cool, maybe it seems Roger Waters and Floyd because of vocals I think, anyway it's really a good one, word. I like Pink Floyd, not all their songs but a several ones. They created something new, a path to go. By the way I see you got on your top the most exceptional band now a day "The Locust", I love them, hehehehehe, and I dare to compare with the greatest bands of past and present, honestly. I call the music they make "Abstract Expressionism", awesome. If you are interested in listening anything which reminds to The Locust, look for Carles Santos, one of the most important creative composer and pianist of modern music.
