About me:

Pilipino American Alliance

ucb.paa@gmail.com

Mission Statement:

In the ongoing attempt to serve and interact with the Pilipino community, the Pilipino American Alliance stands to promote a network of social support through the encouragement of political struggle, academic excellence, and cultural awareness while celebrating cultural diversity.

- revised by PAA Core 2002-2003

History:

Established in 1969, the Pilipino American Alliance, formerly called the Filipino Student Association (FSA), grew out of an era when racism and oppression of Third World peoples occurred in the United States. These issues prompted students of Berkeley to advocate and fight for the creation of an ethnic studies program and a Third World College, collectively called the Third World Liberation Front (TWLF).

In the midst of this turbulent era of protest and struggle, Pilipino students rallied together to create an organization to advance political, economic, and social justice. The Pilipino American Alliance was initiated by its founders to protect and enhance the representation of Pilipinos and Pilipino Americans on the Berkeley campus and the surrounding community. Its purpose was “to bring together Pilipinos on campus, provide Pilipino students opportunities for interaction through social activities, and give them a chance to work on Pilipino community projects in Oakland and San Francisco communities.”

During its forty-one year existence, the purposes of PAA have been adapted and tailored to the ever-changing needs of the Pilipino and Pilipino American community at Cal. Since the amendment of PAA’s mission statement in 2002, PAA has strived to promote a network of social support for the Pilipino and Pilipino American community through the encouragement of political struggle, academic excellence, and cultural awareness while encouraging unity on campus through the celebration of cultural diversity.

American Music Theatre of San Jose presents
Flower Drum Song

Filipino Heritage Night
November 8, 2008 at 8p
San Jose Center for the Performing Arts
255 Almaden Boulevard, downtown San Jose

Music by RICHARD RODGERS
Lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II
Book by DAVID HENRY HWANG
Based on the original book by
Oscar Hammerstein II and Joseph Fields
Based on the novel by C.Y. Lee

Set in the late 1950s, this new adaptation centers on Mei-Li who arrives in San Francisco's Chinatown after fleeing communist China. The naive young refugee is befriended by Wang, who is struggling to keep the Chinese Opera theatrical tradition alive despite his son's determination to turn the family theatre into a rowdy nightclub. A unique blending of American razz-ma-tazz and stylized Chinese traditions, this beautiful theatrical tapestry is highlighted by its wonderful score, that is both romantic and showbiz-brassy and includes "I Enjoy Being a Girl," "A Hundred Million Miracles," "Sunday" and "Chop Suey."

Part of the proceeds goes to
