The man credited with being so great for freeing the slaves had no great goal of doing so it was nothing but a political ploy to hold the Union together basically keep the sheep under the big governments control and not let them break rank....Free slaves and you effectively destabilize the side with slaves.
The very man who freed the slaves also said this in a letter to Horace Greeley on Aug. 22, 1862....... "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and it is not either to save or destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it"
Anyway I saw your quote by him an just thought I'd make sure your informed on the man that history spared.....But of course history is always written by the winners as they say so no surprise they leave those quotes out of the school books :)
