Prospect Omaha: The UFL Taps the Midwest
    February 20, 2010
    by Ron Bodine

There has been a great deal of discussion at UFL Access since news broke that Omaha, Neb., will be the site of a United Football League expansion team in 2010. Omaha is the largest city in the state of Nebraska and has a thriving business community. It is home to five Fortune 500 companies (Mutual of Omaha, Berkshire Hathaway, ConAgra Foods, Union Pacific Railroad, and Kiewit Corporation), and in 2008, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine named Omaha the nation’s third-best city in the United States to live and work.
Here is a breakdown of information on Omaha as a sports market and a comparison to Green Bay:

    Omaha, Neb.
Population (including greater metropolitan area): 837,925
    Television Market Ranking: 75
    Stadium: Rosenblatt Stadium (capacity: 25,500)
Other Major Pro Sports Team(s): [none]
Former Outdoor Pro Football Team(s): Omaha Mustangs (Continental Football League)

    Green Bay, Wisc.
Population (including greater metropolitan area): 226,778
    Television Market Ranking: 69
    Stadium: Lambeau Field (capacity: 72,928)
Other Major Pro Sports Team(s): none
Former Outdoor Pro Football Team(s): [none]

New York Sentinels Move to Hartford and Chris Palmer Is Named Head Coach
    February 16, 2010
    by Ron Bodine
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Michael Huyghue officially announced today what has been reported for weeks by various media sources. The New York Sentinels will in fact be relocating to Rentschler Field in Hartford, Conn. Hartford is the 28th-largest television market in the United States and has no other major professional sports with which the UFL would have to share that market. Although Hartford may not have the potential to tap a New York City-sized market, Hartford also lacks the competition from other professional sports, which was clearly a hurdle for the Sentinels during that franchise’s 2009 season in the Big Apple. Expect Hartford to prove a strong non-NFL market for the UFL.

Sentinels Football: New York vs. Hartford
    by Ron Bodine
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Several rumors in recent months have given way to a great deal of speculation regarding the possibility of the New York Sentinels relocating to Hartford for the United Football League’s second season.  The issue became more widely contested after the New York Post indicated in January that the move was certain to happen.  When you look at the data comparing each of these markets, the pros and cons of keeping a UFL franchise in New York are fairly evident:

    Hartford
Population (including greater metropolitan area): 1,188,241
    Television Market Ranking: 28
    Stadium: Rentschler Field (capacity: 40,000)
Other Major Pro Sports Team(s): [none]
Former Outdoor Pro Football Team(s): Hartford Blues (NFL)

    New York
Population (including greater metropolitan area): 19,006,798
    Television Market Ranking: 1
Stadium: Citi Field (capacity: 41,800); Yankee Stadium (capacity: 50,086); James M. Shuart Stadium in Hamstead, New York (capacity: 15,000)
Other Major Pro Sports Team(s): New York Giants (NFL); New York Jets (NFL); New York Yankees (MLB); New York Mets (MLB); New York Knicks (NBA); New York Rangers (NHL); New York Islanders (NHL); New York Red Bulls (MLS)
Former Outdoor Pro Football Team(s): New York/New Jersey Hitmen (XFL); New York/New Jersey Knights (WLAF); New York Stars (WFL); New York Yankees/Americans (AFL-1940); New York Yankees (NFL/AFL-1926)

A History of American Football in San Antonio
    January 31, 2010
    by Ron Bodine
    Image and
video hosting by TinyPic
San Antonio is one of the more ideal locations for a UFL football team because it is about 200 miles away from the nearest NFL franchise and a top 40 television market.  San Antonio is known for its cultural diversity, the Battle of the Alamo, and a lack of NCAA football.  The University of Texas at San Antonio is one of the largest Universities in the United States not to have NCAA football but they have established a program that will kick off for the 2011 NCAA season.  Here is a breakdown of data on the San Antonio market:

    San Antonio

Population (including greater metropolitan area): 2,031,445
    Television Market Ranking: 37
Stadium: Alamodome (capacity: 65,000, expandable to 72,000)
Other Major Pro Sports Team(s): San Antonio Spurs (NBA)
Former Outdoor Pro Football Team(s): San Antonio Texans (CFL); San Antonio Riders (WLAF); San Antonio Gunslingers (USFL); San Antonio Wings (WFL)

    California Redwoods: Playing the Field
    January 28, 2010
    by Ron Bodine

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
When the United Football League first announced that it would base one of its “premiere” season franchises in San Francisco the initial vibe among the fan base was that it was an idea certain to fail. It seemed to be a “no-brainer” that a franchise with the longevity and branding power of the San Francisco 49ers would be too stiff of competition for a fall start-up football league. The UFL pressed ahead in San Francisco and, although losses during an abbreviated season were inconsequential to ownership, the early numbers seemed to project that San Francisco would indeed be an uphill competition for the UFL. This is probably why the Sacrameno Bee reported Tuesday that the Redwoods are likely to relocate to Sacramento. The California Redwoods are a franchise clearly rooted in Northern California, and here is a comparison of some of the larger cities well north of the Los Angeles market:

    San Francisco
Population (including greater metropolitan area): 4,203,898
    Television Market Ranking: 5
    Stadium: AT & T Park (capacity: 41,503)
Other Major Pro Sports Team(s): San Francisco 49ers (NFL); San Francisco Giants (MLB)

    Sacramento
Population (including greater metropolitan area): 2,091,120
    Television Market Ranking: 20
Stadium: Hornet Stadium at California State University (capacity: 21,195)
Other Major Pro Sports Team(s): Sacramento Kings (NBA)

BAY OF PIGS: A CINDERELLA STORY IN LAS VEGAS
    by Ron Bodine
    30 November 2009
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
I have been following the United Football League for over two years (back when it appeared to be just a Wikipedia page with a logo and a list of 21 potential team markets).  Bill Hambrecht and Tim Armstrong are successful businessmen and well financed, so their investment in a new professional football league deserved some attention. And as the league gradually released more information over the months and announced established professionals with prior NFL experience (e.g., Michael Huyghue and Frank Vuono), I knew this league was attempting to build a foundation that was different from other start-up professional football leagues.

I occasionally scoured the internet for information, articles, and new UFL-themed websites.  I found a handful of sources, but only one arose that seemed to have frequent and reliable updates (UFL Access.com).  I became a regular poster there and after several discussions with UFL Access news director Nation Hahn, I later became an opinion editorial contributor and analyst for the site.  I have worked in the Health Care industry for nearly a decade, so all of this was fairly new to me, but I enjoyed the in-depth involvement and access to inside information.

Locos Spoil Florida Tuskers Undefeated Season With 20-17 Overtime Victory

LAS VEGAS (November 27, 2009) – The Las Vegas Locomotives won the first championship of the United Football League Friday with a 20-17 overtime defeat of the Florida Tuskers before 14,801 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

Locos running back DeDe Dorsey, who scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to force overtime, was named the game’s Title Sports Drink Most Valuable Player. Las Vegas kicker Graham Gano drilled a 33-yard field goal in overtime for the win, igniting a spirited celebration on the Locos’ sideline and among their home fans in the stands.

    UFLAccess.com 2009 Preview: Ron Bodine
4 October 2009 by Ron Bodine
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
First and Foremost, fans should expect the UFL to be a very competitive league.  The UFL was built from a strong foundation of experienced executives and committed ownership groups that have put forth a painstaking effort to create the best league possible for this “premiere season.”  All of the UFL’s teams are “well-grounded” in their own right and will struggle for victories that carry significant weight in a regular season that is only 6 games long. Here is my breakdown as follows…

UFL Logos Revealed Via Trademark Office
30 September 2009 by Nation Hahn
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
We knew they were coming and now they are here per the US Trademark Office. The four UFL teams’ primary logos were found in trademark filings over night. Images are below this article, and discussion is available in our forums.

These are the primary logos only. They are only a piece of the total branding puzzle which includes secondary logos, an innovative helmet stripe, and wordmark. The helmet stripes will be unique to each team. Logo colors will match the Premiere Season jerseys, but could change during subsequent seasons.
