An Ugly but Helpful History (2004 – Present):
Initially as a secret project intended for personal use only, the one girl operation consisting of Jen Kutler (Choose, Lay Back and Think of England) was made public oddly enough by blackmail. Songs that were carefully crafted as a secluded escapism from certain social atrocities were kept confidential until a nosey interloper threatened to bring stolen recordings to the light of the outside world. This project is thus an attempt to recollect the straying pieces of a shattered psyche in recorded form at a proverbial gunpoint. No names are changed. No privacy is respected. It is raw, unrestrained and shameless as it was intended for no one and thus has a seemingly irresistible exhibitionist quality; a free peepshow of sorts. With a full length album on the way produced by Billy Populus (Chicks on Speed, Shawn Colvin, Dave Matthews Band) and meticulous and moving live performances, Ugly But Helpful is actively surrendering to it’s self by surrendering to its ever-growing voyeuristic fan base.
