The Brand New UD Video - Smack!!
Formed in Long Beach, California around 1993,
lyricists Andy and Dizzy and D.J. Young Einstein have
been putting out classic hip-hop records and touring
the world for the last 6 years. They've earned
acclaim and respect within Hip-Hop culture while
consistently selling records and even grabbing an
occasional international chart position. Amazingly,
U.D. has rocked 5 continents on a quest to spread
their positive and exciting brand of music. They
recently performed in China becoming only the second
rap group to do so.
Coming off of their last release (the cult-famous
concept album "Taste the Secret") the boys needed to
get back to basics. Dizzy proclaims, "We wanted to do
something more straight-up and raw that would have an
instant impact on a listener". Einstein adds, "We
made the songs more up-tempo, hi-powered and bold".
BANG FOR THE BUCK is just that. 12 relentless tracks
with slamming breaks, funky basslines, huge horn
sections and tight, aggressive rapping. Inspired by
the energy and excitement or live performance, the
group sought to translate the on-stage feeling to the
recording process. The result is an album that is
almost combustible.
"We wanted the record to sound like a fight-scene
from an old, cowboy movie. Big hits and loud shots
ringing out. Destructive but fun, like cartoon
violence." Andy continues, "We took 9 months off the
road to put 'BANG FOR THE BUCK' together and a lot of
pent-up ire came out in the studio." Songs like the
smash-you-over-the-head-with-a-bottle of a track
called "Smack!" show the band's angry side with lyrics
pointed towards commercial hip-hop stars:
Smile and blow kisses your image is fictitious/
Pop junk but you're a punk like sid vicious/
Dizzy complains, "Somebody has to say it". Other
stand-out numbers include an exciting, horn-drenched
re-introduction to the group called "Yudee", a scream-
along named "Let it Out" and a funky rocker titled
"The Breakdown" that recalls the band's struggle to
make a name for itself.
"Lower the Boom", a salute to the pounding of 808
kick-drum, will test your stereo's E.Q. capabilities
and "Left Behind" is the fastest track (around 124
beats per minute) that the band has ever done. Dizzy
gasps "I'm still out of breath from that one". Also
included is a rare collaboration with "People Under
the Stairs" called "Shoot Your Shot". Inspired by A
Tribe Called Quest's "Scenario", U.D. and P.U.T.S. put
together a jumping track that will get a listener
yelling along with all of the hooks.
The group feels that this is their best album
yet.
"No cute stuff" says Andy "All boom and pow. We came
out with guns blazing." Remaining true to their sound
and classic approach to hip-hop music, Ugly Duckling
has fired back with an album that might put some life
back into a scene that can be overly
fashion-conscience and decadently repetitive.
Einstein sums it all up by saying "We can't wait to
get out on the road and perform our new material.
We're going to shoot the roof down. In a good way".
