As the release date of LA DUBSTEP NOSTRA'S 2nd release come close Nu-urban is interested in finding out a little bit about each of the artists that show their skills on this mighty 12".
So for all that don't know, this 12" come with 3 huge tracks from the like of PARSON, ULTRABLACK & MONSTA. We plan to sit down with each of them and ask them a few questions.
Let's speak ULTRABLACK now
NU – hello ULTRABLACK, for all that don't know who you are, can you let us know your names and where you are from?
ADR (Adroit) of UB: Bryan Marek, Born and raised Phoenix, Arizona
TOS (TheOneSpy) of UB: Nick Suddarth, and I was born and raised in the valley of the suN! Phoenix, Az.
NU – so how did you get together?
ADRofUB: Old school drum and bass dj's that decided that if you weren't a producer /dj then you will be left behind. So nick and I started Producing Drum and Bass, and about 3 yrs after decided to dabble in some Dubstep after relizing that it had the same flexibility. And we were hooked.
TOSofUB: I first ran in to bryan when i was writing music with his roommate......all i could hear is this nazty style of drum n bass Rockin out of his studio and i was hooked. The rest is HISTORY!!!
NU – so for all that don't know, how long have you been making music, and do you make any other genre of music? If so what is your favourite genre to make?
ADRofUB: 5yrs. Drum & Bass 3.5 years / Dubstep 1.5 years and Electro 4 months
Definatly Dubstep, however I am known to smash out a nasty drum and bass joint from time to time. Our electro project should be making its way out to the public in 4 more months or some under the aliais "FunkDerby" which includeds 3 producers and 2 vocalist.
TOSofUB: ? Ive been making music since about 2004......i guess i really couldn't call it making music back then, more like and making noises...As far as other genres, of course.....at this time we are working on a new Electro House project: FUNK DERBY. Big things and ideas coming from this. Also we have been writing drum n bass since the beginning which also helps with some heavy metal/idm music we have been focusing on as well.
NU – what is your biggest influence when making your music?
ADRofUB: I would have to say the sounds that I use, getting new sounds always get me hyped. I'm always think'n shit up in my head or hearing samples from whatever source.
TOSofUB: My biggest influence and most of all the is hearing the ideas that come from bryan's evil finger tips. Once i hear a nazty groove that is rockin then there is no way to stop the UB bus.
NU – where do you get your inspiration from?
ADRofUB: The depths of my mind, the deamons in my head, and everyone else that is badass.
TOSofUB: wow, i really look all over the music realm for my inspiration. And the biggest form of inspiration is having a pair of big boobies bouncing around during a UB rinse OUT!!!
NU – do you always work together, or do you have your separate things going on as well?
ADRofUB: I'm 90% of the time bombing on music at my lab solo, on many projects mainly dub, electro, and dnb. Then I end up sending the files via aim to the other half of UltraBlack until the tracks are finished. And I have a side project titled under " Blanco Flow " that is experimental beats unreleased materal until who knows howlong.
TOSofUB: We definitely work together as well as solo.....But no matter what i dip my hands into i let bryan take a look at and if its sounding appealing, its turns into a OG UB collab once again.
NU- every producer has a certain sound that they pursue, do you have your own sound and if so can you describe it?
UltraBlack: Any one that's heard a UltraBlack track, knows it's an UltraBlack track. Ruff, Rugged, Raw, Intelligent, And High Energy, with DnB tactics.
NU – what do you use to make your music? And do you have any handy production tips / secrets you could tell the world?
UltraBlack: Reason 4, sometimes rewired into Ableton. Zeta for creating my Bass, then resampled. Filter! Filter! Filter! Automation is your best friend (it also makes your endurance last longer if your not listening to the same loops for hours). Never hesitate to take a number of ideas that you have from one track even if its going in a different direction and slide alternate project to the right, out of the way till later.
NU – i have been hearing allot of good stuff from you guys! So for all that don't know, can you tell them what tracks you have had out in the past and what you have got forthcoming?
UltraBlack: We just had vinyl releases on 10BAG 004, (Baynger [UB] & Roll Heavy [collabo TrillBass] ) SHIFT 002, ( SouthWest Gangstaz [ UB & Xian1 collabo ] L.A. DUBSTEP NOSTRA 002, ( Hate On Us ) & Forthcoming on GRINCH ( DogBite ). There are a ton of digital releases which you can find all over one, in particular release an E.P. release on FoulPlay Dubstep that has one of my favorite tunes released yet, “Mobb’n With A Harp” which my roommate Kerel Riley had composed this incredible 4 piece harmony. With some added UltraBlack Bass it became a hit.
NU – who is your favourite producer at the moment?
ADRofUB: The Widdler / And any producer on Lukki's show "Shift Radio" on Subfm.com
TOSofUB: This is a toughy...im into alot of the dubstep that is being produced at the moment... Stateside and from across the pond. but one guy that is really sticking out in my opinion is THE WIDDLER from New Jersey, Some disgusting toons from this young gun.
NU – this is a bit of a random question but I ask everyone I interview. If you were stuck on a desert island and could only have 3 things, what would they be?
ADRofUB: The girl of my dreams / Endless Crate of Drugs / Boat
TOSofUB: Hahahah, o man..... First thing is a endless supply of Kush for those smoking needs......lol
Second would have to be HUH....a slew of hot Sicilian chick models with condoms (the gold wrapper preferred)
and finally, Patron SILVER!!!!!!!!!
NU - What can we expect to see from you this year and the years to come?
ADRofUB: Expect to see the UB onslaught, barrel threw the dubstep gauntlet, A horde of Releases! UltraBlack Recordings, and a few mini tours, plus a EuroTour Summer 2009 if everything goes as planned.
TOSofUB: Expect to see the UB onslaught barrel threw the dubstep gauntlet, plus our side projects coming at u full of funk, bass, drumz and energy
NU – finally, what did you have for breakfast today?
ADRofUB: Umm... Bacon?
TOSofUB: Well, i really don't eat breakfast but i do drink a couple cups of coffee with 4 creamers and 5 seconds worth of sugar!
NU - Where can people find out about you? Can you give us any links or sites to check out?

Gamma Audio is back to further diversify its catalouge with
Killeralien's "Nolife" EP. It combines tribal influenced drum
patterns and we placed elements of Psy-trance and Nuero. Its
futuristic sound creates a common element through out the entire EP,
while each song progresses in its own direction. Featuring
four original songs by Killeralien (London, UK) and a collaboration
with B1t Crunch3r (Hollywood, CA, USA). This is a release
that is not to be missed and is sure to tear up any
venue.
I got into jungle before dubstep because I didn't know about dubstep, than I went and saw a bassrush one off with andy c and the other room was dubstep and I was immediately hooked.
The only problem I have is that sometimes it gets so repetitive, especially U.K dubstep, but you guys manage to keep it fresh and not sounding like its the same thing for the whole song.
Props, to you guys.
I'm hoping someday, someone will fuse together some grimey DnB that breaks into halftime and goes into dubstep style, and always incorporate both into the songs.
