Sun House plays Betty's Rock Club, 7/11/08. Song: 'Wait So Long'
Sun House plays music that moves effortlessly from rock to soul, funk to reggae, latin to blues and back again. There is only one requirement for a Sun House song: that it be honest.
Lead singer Douglas Price and guitarist Josh Garey have been friends since grammar school, and yet they have traveled very different paths to reach this point. After high school they formed a band called Private Culture, which played the local Bay Area scene for three years, doing gigs with bands such as No Doubt and Primus. Private Culture’s trumpet player, Stephen Bradley, went on to join No Doubt and later Gwen Stefani’s solo band to tour the world countless times over.
After Private Culture disbanded, Douglas spent several years as a vocal soloist for the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, headlining places like Slim’s and the Paramount Theater in Oakland. Josh spent many years writing, recording and performing with Comfy Chair, “The World’s Last – and First – Time Traveling Vaudevillian Band”, playing such venerable establishments as the Great American Music Hall, the Viper Room and the Whiskey a Go-Go. Comfy Chair also licensed a song to Elektra Records for a new-swing compilation called ‘Jump Up and Boogie’ which featured the Brian Setzer Orchestra. In addition, Josh spent about a year and a half touring and performing as lead guitarist for San Francisco's legendary Gun and Doll Show.
Ready to return to their roots, Josh & Doug formed Sun House in December 2006, and with the help of Stephen Bradley and his partner, ace musician and producer Dave Tweedie they recorded their first album together in over a decade.
‘Ushu Ones’, Sun House’s debut, is a trip both into the past as well as the future. The record features Douglas & Josh as well as an A-list of Bay Area talent: Joel Griffin on drums (Zoe Ellis, Shana Morrison), Stephen Bradley on trumpet (No Doubt, Gwen Stefani), Julia Bordenaro on backing vocals (Vocolot) and ivory giant Jerome Rossen playing keys, among others. The live band often features another childhood friend, Dustin Hengl of American legend Willie Nelson’s band on trumpet.
Sun House is dedicated to making music that moves the body, mind and spirit. We hope you enjoy their Rock & Soul for the People.
