It's been way too long since your last visit to a Bulgarian bar.
Good thing Mehanata (better known as simply "Bulgarian Bar") has just reopened in its new LES location, just in time to get your Slavic party fix.
Whether you were a regular at the old location or have never raved all night to gypsy music, checking out the new Mehanata is a must for a night that involves a band playing Hava Nagila remixes while people sing, dance and suck down sweet Bulgarian grappa out of fishbowls.
Look for a sign marked "Kuma," and head inside the considerably nicer bi-level digs, done up like a raw Eastern European saloon. A huge bronze chandelier hangs next to a laundry line of bras and underwear (apparently a string of missed tosses).
A wild international dance scene ensues with Eastern European electro- punk and international dancehall music. A brass band blows out from the center of the foot-stomping crowd, which is fun, diverse and unpretentious—everyone is just there to have a good time. So don't be surprised if by the end of the night you're caught up in some sweaty, booze-filled circle-dancing while toasting everyone "Na zdrave!"
No one produces modern records like Brasilian artists do. Uma Batida Diferente is just totally awesome. The grooves ("Bonita") are to die for and sometimes every aspect of the overall track is just insane ("Samba Da Minha Terra").
You guys (as well as some of the other Ziriguiboom artists) are the future of pop music. You're the ones taking it in the next direction; and you're doing it without sacrificing feel, color, artistry, and vibe.
