' Umami ® ' is a flute-piano duo, consisting of Belgian flutist Oriana Dierinck, and Bulgarian conductor / pianist Ivo Venkov, living in Antwerp.
' umami ' is a word used in Oriental cooking and literally means ' fifth taste ' : not sweet, salty, sour or bitter, but one all-enclosing taste-'feeling'.
Scientific expertise has shown this taste-experience to be formed by a very specific protein, that unites ànd strongens this different tastes.
Sceptics on the other hand wonder if this experience isn't rather a personal, subjective one, than a clearly definable matter.
In this way, also the performance of music could be described : maybe it's not very useful trying to describe 'what' and 'how', and is it more a personal matter of feeling and emotion...
' Umami ® ' has a vast repertoire and can make a very attractive program with it. Apart from that, their musical enjoyment can be very contageous and inspiring, which creates a very specific atmosphere and concert.
Since its foundation in 2003 ' Umami ® ' has played in a.o. 't Hof in Dordrecht, Day of Romantic Music in Rotterdam, Music Stage Twente, De Rode Pomp in Ghent, National Day of Chamber Music 2005 at ' de Philharmonie ' in Haarlem and the Royal Piet Staut Foundation.
On a regular basis, ' Umami ® ' collaborates with writers and poets from the Netherlands and Belgium, such as Kreek Daey Ouwens, D. Hooijer and Peter Ghyssaert. In the past there were the projects ' Poème en Proze ' in collaboration with poets Elma van Haren en Peter Ghyssaert (0506), ' Sonnetten van de Kleine Waanzin ' ( ' Sonnets of Little Insanity ' ) by Hans Andreus with literary translator Paul Beers (0607), and in 0708 the poetic fairytale ' Opa Perenboom ' of Dutch writer Kreek Daey Ouwens.
' Umami ® ' has a unique sound and its performances are known to be very captivating.
As ' Umami ® ' always tries to play ' in the moment ', this ensemble knows how to challenge themselves ànd his audiences !
