   About Uncle John Turner
August 20, 1944 - July 26, 2007

Uncle John Turner was born and raised in Port Arthur, Texas. He first played drums with Jerry LaCroix. Unc met Johnny Winter as a teenager and performed with him a few times as a substitute. In 1968, Unc convinced Johnny to try a full blown blues band and sent for his friend Tommy Shannon to play bass. This group quickly got natonal recognition and began making records and shortly after that played Woodstock, with Edgar Winter as the fourth member In late 1970, the Johnny Winter band split up and Uncle John and Tommy moved to San Francisco where they formed Krackerjack, with original band members Unc and Tommy as well as Jesse Taylor, Bruce Bowland, and Mike Kindred. They moved to Austin and Krackerjack quickly became one of the biggest bands in Texas. Over the next few years, some of the major guitarists included Robin Syler, John Staehely, Gary Myrick, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Unc then moved to Houston for a while and made records with Isaac Payton Sweat, Ezra Charles, and Joey Long and played and recorded the next four years with Alan Haynes. After this, Johnny Winter, Tommy Shannon, and Uncle John did some recording on Johnny's Third Degree album. Uncle John then joined Paul Orta and traveled Europe for a number of years in a band composed of Hector Watt, Pierre Pelegrin, Paul, and Unc. Unc made three albums with Paul during this time. In 1997, Appa Perry called Unc in Europe and asked him if he wanted to form a band. Unc gladly agreed. This band subsequently became the Blues Power project, which featured Unc and Appa and different "guest" artists, including Alan Haynes, Tony Redman, Mike Keller, Matt Farrell, Matthew Robinson, John McVey, Mark Goodwin, Erin "Icewater" Jaimes, Eve Monsees, Gary Clark Jr., Shawn Pittman, and Sweet Basil McJagger, among others. Uncle John has jammed with B. B. King, Jimi Hendrix, Freddie King, Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Lightnin' Hopkins, and many more. Unc has also recorded with Walter "Shakey" Horton, Willie Dixon, Albert Collins, Nuno Mindelis (the Blues King of Brazil), Benoît Blue Boy (the godfather of French blues), Lazy Lester, and many more. On July 26, 2007, Unc lost his battle with Hepatitis C and liver failure. He raised butterflies and orchids and continued to mentor young musicians up until his death. He was married to Austin school teacher Morgan Goldbarth (Turner).

PLEASE REPOST AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS! Peace, Love, and Rock Fest!!!
April 5th, 2008

There is a RockFest on April 5th, 2008 @ The Oaks - The Oaks is a beautiful music venue, bar and traditional ice house located on 100 acres at the outskirts of Austin - see www. theoakslive. com. Below are the bands playing that day. To the media - these bands have some iconic players and are worthy of recognition in the community media. I hope you will see this as yet another way to help and promote the music community. Please get in touch with me about what you can do to help make this possible. Thank you, Lynne 512-716-0981.

FEVER TREE RISING is an ascension from the band, Fever Tree, utilizing the distinguishing vocals of their original lead singer, Dennis Keller. National fame arrived when Fever Trees' song "San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native)" made the Billboard Top 100. Fever Tree went on to produce four albums - the first album reaching Gold status - and a “Best of” album/cd which is considered as their fifth. Fever Tree’s albums and CDs continue to sell well in the U.S. and Europe and have been re-released many times and as recently as October 2006. FEVER TREE RISING is currently resurrecting many songs from Fever Tree’s original body of work. Another celebrated talent is their Bass Guitarist, Mark Andes, who was a founding member of such cutting edge bands as Canned Heat and Spirit while still a teenager. Mark has also played with Firefall, Stevie Nicks, Dan Fogelberg, Whitesnake, Jo Jo Gunne, Chris Hillman, Kim Carnes, John Fahey, Iain Matthews, Kelly Willis, Jim Lauderdale, Eliza Gilkyson, and Joe Walsh. John Fannin, FEVER TREE RISING’S Lead Guitarist, is another star performer, having been the lead guitarist for Rusty Wier for over ten years. John has also been a successful songwriter having writing credits which have charted on Billboard.

The Dead Pyrates Society have many years of experience playing around the world with various national acts including Jo Jo Gunne, Spirit, Bob Dylan, and Paul Rogers of Bad Company. John Staehley and Jimmie Randall of the Pyrates also served as the rhythm section on Keith Moon's solo album, Two Sides of the Moon. With musical relationships that date back over three decades, The Pyrates have come together to produce an original rock driven sound that is all it’s own. After a year of writing and arranging the Pyrates have hit the Texas music scene with rave reviews, and an awesome following.

Freddie Steady is a Texas Music Hall-of-Famer. This renaissance Texan has pounded out a steady beat on the drums around the world and across miles and miles of Texas for the past several decades. Krc landed in Austin at the precise moment that a musical revolution was getting started at a styles-don’t-matter joint called the Armadillo World Headquarters. He has done session drumming, including studio work, with everyone from Jimmie Dale Gilmore to Carole King, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters to The Faces’ Ronnie Lane. Freddie has played with Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, The Shakin Apostles, and has backed up Roky Erickson as a member of the The Explosives for many years.

Shandon Sahm is the youngest son of Sir Doug Sahm, leader of country-rock pioneers The Sir Douglas Quintet and later of the groundbreaking Texas Tornadoes, Shandon is a longtime veteran of the music industry. Besides playing with his legendary father, Shandon established his own indelible musical mark recording, touring and performing as a drummer with artists such as Curt Kirkwood and the Meat Puppets, Gibby Haynes and His Problem, as well as being a founding member of the highly influential Austin-based hard-rock outfit Pariah (Geffen Records) in the early 90's. Amplified Heat, was touted as being “another trio that knocked me out at SXSW, (Release Date October 2, 2007) It was quoted that the rock dreams that quickly came to mind are: Stevie Ray Vaughan fronting the Groundhogs; ZZ Top with Blue Cheer running in their veins…” – David Fricke, Rolling Stone (2007). In 2003 Amplified Heat paired up with Chico Jones and the completion of the record was set into course. Chris “Frenchie” Smith was brought in to work as a vocal producer and engineer. Amplified Heat signed to Arclight Records in 2004 and released their debut full-length album “In For Sin” in November of that year. This will be their third release with the label.

Marshall Dylan with Heardon X - on guitar and vocals. Herndon X played in Houston in the 70's Pecos Bill and Short Fuze. Their bass player Derven, has toured all over Texas and Europe in the late 70's and 80's. Their guitar player Wangtoyd played in Austin for years with groups like Zero Tolerance, Zanex, and Sillier Killers, the drummer Trish, whose biggest success was playing with an English band called Shark taboo. They toured Europe and Texas where they were on MTV and the BBC. In Austin, where she has drummed for years, she played with the bands The Librarians, Raised by Humans,Black Novas, and Hand to Mouth.

The Bus Stop Stallions takes you back to funk's hey-days of rhythm and consciousness. Their music is partly a blast from the past, but more importantly it is propulsion into the future of the funk. They are united in bringing the world pure positivity with their stanky hypnotic grooves.

…the Spring 2008 Peace, Love, and Rock Fest!!!

This is going to be an awesome event celebrating the finer points of life - good food, good drink, …and damn good music!

Uncle John,
My prayers are with you, and your family and loved ones.

May God Bless You,
Bobby

ON THE WINGS OF A PRAYER

Just close your Eyes and open your heart,

And feel your worries and cares depart.

Just yield yourself to the Father above,

And let him hold you secure in his love.

For life on earth grows more involved,

With endless problems that can't be solved,

But God only ask us to do our best,

Then he will take over and finish the rest...

So when you are tired, discouraged and blue,

There is always one door that is open to you,

And that is the door to The House of Prayer,

And you'll find God waiting to meet you there.

And The House of Prayer is no further away,

than the quiet spot where you kneel and pray.

For the heart is a temple when God is there

As we place ourselves in his loving care.

And he hears every prayer and answers each one

When we Pray in His name - Thy will be done.

The burdens that seemed too heavy to bear

Are lifted away on the wings of a prayer.

God bless you always, you are loved by many, and have touched the lives of so many people that you don't even know. Take care.
