Bio:
Jeremy Castro Baguyos, a Filippino-American transplanted to the North American Heartland, is a computer-mediated sound artist exploring the new forms of human expression at the intersection of tradition and technology. Attracted by the esoteric, yet, multi-disciplinary art of computer music, he has been actively involved in various facets of Computer Music since 1999, the year he joined the 21st Century Ensemble (Washington, DC). His interests in music can be traced to the public school system in Overland Park, Kansas (USA) where he grew up, but his interest in technology can be traced to the early Apple computers, a Fostex multitrack recorder, and consumer-level Yamaha and Casio synths. Of course, at the same time, his peer group consisted of friends who played Atari 2600, watched Battlestar Galactica, and played Dungeons & Dragons with dice and books. He likes to think he has been most inspired by the early pioneers of electronic music such as the composers of Columbia-Princeton, but he was probably more inspired by groups like Devo and Kraftwerk. His favorite projects have traditionally included sound installations and interactive computer improvisation. Currently, he is concentrating most of his current efforts in computer music research on two fronts: (1) the development of automated and intelligent audio analysis and editing systems and (2) immersive/interactive environments (live and virtual). Although there is no obvious benefit to society, he still harbors dreams of producing Stockhausen's Helikopter-Streichquartettbecause he believes that it is the most audacious multimedia presentation since Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. Despite his numerous academic and professional accomplishments, he will probably be remembered most for creating and presenting an interactive and artificially intelligent sound installation at a small, rural college that forcibly removed the installation due to angry protests from other artists, the college’s staff, and administrators who were afraid of losing funding for their Humanities programs if the "noisy" and "offensive" installation was not removed immediately. He is proud of his midwestern roots and the rural landscapes of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Western Illinois are often the subject matter (or at the very least, the inspiration) for some of his more recent creative activity. ..
