JOHN HAWKINS (November 15, 1969 – May 1, 2006), better known as the Screwed Up Click’s 5 Star General, Big Hawk, HaDubK, or H.A.W.K., was a well established rapper from Houston, Texas. Hawk started rapping in 1992 when his younger brother, the late great Fat Pat, took him to DJ Screw’s house. Hawk and Pat went on to become original members of the late DJ Screw’s rap posse called The Screwed Up Click (S.U.C.). After huge success on countless screw tapes the two brothers decided to start elevating their game. Pat’s “Ghetto Dream” was to help bring not just Houston, but the entire south to the forefront of the rap industry.

In 1994 Hawk, Pat, Screw and some of their good friends, KK and Koldjack, collaborated to form the group D.E.A. and Dead End Records (named for the dead end block of MLK where Hawk grew up). In late1995 D.E.A. released an original independent album entitled, “Screwed For Life” featuring Lil KeKe, Pokey and the rest of the S.U.C.; a southern classic that can still empty shelves. After the deaths of Hawk’s brother (Fat Pat) and DJ Screw and the incarceration of many others, Hawk’s ultimate mission and goal became keeping the “Ghetto Dream” alive. In 1999 Hawk participated in a SouthSide Playaz compilation album titled “You Got Us Fuxxed Up,” with Mike D, 3-2, Claydoe and other members of the S.U.C.

In 2000 Hawk kept mashing and released his first solo album, “Unda HAWK’s Wings.” Also that same year Hawk scored a feature on the platinum hit “Wanna Be a Baller” by Lil Troy. Hawk traveled all over the world performing and when he returned home he quit his steady job of 10 years to pursue music 100%. In 2001, Hawk established “Ghetto Dreams Ent.” in honor of his late brother Fat Pat. He then collaborated with Lil O on the smash hit, “Back Back Give Me 50 Feet.” Next, he partnered with Game Face Records in 2002 and released his first album under his label Ghetto Dreams Ent., self titled, “HAWK.” With the hit song, “U Already Know,” the album charted the Billboard’s list of top R&B and Rap Albums at no. 45. It was at Game Face Records where Hawk met and clicked with a young up and coming group called the GritBoys and an artist named Starchy Arch. He quickly grew a liking to them and their bond grew strong. Hawk and Ghetto Dreams Ent. teamed up with Presidential Records in 2003 to release “A Bad Azz Mix Tape Vol. II.” A year later he and KeKe teamed up to release “Wreckin 2K4” with Presidential Records as well.

It was around this time when the original S.U.C. members, along with M.J. (of Southside Studios) started collaborating on a group/compilation album titled “The Takeover.” The original Screwed Up Click Members (Lil KeKe, Fat Pat, Hawk, Pokey, Mike D, Big Moe, ESG, 3-2, Lil O, Z-Ro, Trae, Lil Flip, Botany Boyz, Chris Ward, Grace and others) had not come together since DJ Screw’s passing and this became Hawk’s main goal. He was featured on the popular single “Swang” by Trae in 2005 that included a tribute to Fat Pat. Hawk was a huge sports fan and had the opportunity to record a song with Clint Dempsey/Deuce of the U.S. 2006 National Soccer Team for Nike’s “Joga Bonita” World Cup called “Don’t Tread.”

In April of 2006 Hawk married his longtime girlfriend and mother of his two children, Meshah Henderson. Also that same month Hawk appeared in Source Magazine in an article titled “Riders on the Storm.” He was genuinely happy and excited about all of the recognition Houston was finally starting to get; the “Ghetto Dream” was becoming real. Hawk’s reputation of hard work, professionalism, honesty, and humbleness allowed him to inspire and mentor artists that he would meet. He grew so popular among the southern underground circuit that everyone wanted to work with him just to meet him (plus he jammed!).

As a result, Hawk has tons and tons of songs recorded with people all throughout the south and the world. Hawk and the S.U.C. helped pioneer the underground Houston rap culture; breaking ground for other Houston artists like Paul Wall, Chamillionaire, Mike Jones, Lil Flip and Slim Thug (friends and co-workers whom Hawk respected) and paving the way for them to achieve worldwide success. Although legendary in the streets, the S.U.C. still strives for worldwide success and recognition of a culture, style, and vocabulary they created in Houston to be honored – the “Ghetto Dream.” Hawk put his solo project, “Endangered Species” on the back burner to pursue the “Ghetto Dream” and mash for the S.U.C. He was perfecting his art; patiently waiting for his time to open the doors for once and for all. Unfortunately, his dream was cut short on May 1, 2006 when he was mysteriously murdered. Since Hawk’s untimely death, his story has appeared in several magazines such as Source, Ozone, Streetwize, Block to Block, and XXL. Hawk was an EXTRAordinary rapper and man with very rare qualities such as honesty, integrity, compassion, loyalty and fairness – an “Endangered Species.” HAWK IS AN ICON AND WILL FOREVER BE MISSED!!!
