| General | About Anorexia:
Anorexia can be defined as the relentless pursuit of thinness through self-starvation and other behaviours such as excessive exercise, binging and purging, laxative use etc. Other characteristics of anorexia include, a fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, body image distortion and a body weight 15% less than that expected for age and height. Female anorexics develop amenorrhea (or loss of periods) whilst males have lower levels of testosterone. Other medical and psychological symptoms may include, depression, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, drug and alcohol problems, heart complications, osteoporosis, electrolyte imbalance, hair loss and lanugo
Anorexia can occur in people of all ages, classes, both sexes, and cultures but is more commonly found in adolescent females and in westernised cultures where food is in abundance. The gender ratio is 9:1 with 10% of cases occurring in males. The typical age of onset is around 10-19 years and the prevalence rate is about 0.5 – 1% although many believe that these figures are rising. Anorexia has one of the highest mortality rates than any other psychiatric disorder with around 10% dying of self-starvation or suicide.
Many believe that anorexia is about weight and body issues, however it is much more than that, anorexia develops as a reaction to life events as a way for the individual to feel in control or as a way of coping. In the words of Susie Orbach (1993) "We need to remember that for those with anorexia and bulimia, the eating problem is not the problem, it is the solution. We can't wrench it away without understanding it." (Hunger Strike, p.xxvi)
Anorexia is a serious disorder and it is important for us to obtain a better understanding

About me:
This profile was edited with myspace-help.org Editor
I am a PhD research student at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh and I am currently conducting research into peoples' understandings and experiences of anorexia.
About the research:
Aims: *- To determine the understandings and experiences of anorexia held by different stakeholders, including those who wish to maintain their anorexia, those wishing to recover, and those who have recovered. *To improve people's understandings of anorexia and those who have it. *It is hoped that this research will inform treatment practice.
The research has been conducted and I am no longer looking for participants. I am currently analysing results and writing up the research.
Thank you to all those who helped out.
