Notable Notes On Rock-N-Roll Star

By Scott Connelly

I opened the files...

I unzipped...

I hunched over my notebook...

And I listened to The Undeniable's debut album, Rock-N-Roll Star.

Then I took notes:

1. Rock-N-Roll Star - A song of rebellion, sticking it to critics and detractors. Sounds like an 80's tune with a little Clash.

2. Evil Creep - Reminds me of Nickleback; haunting, foreboding, challenging. The synthesizers sound out of place in such a hard-rocking piece, but the little bit of Pittsburghese is welcoming :)

3. Filthy Mind - Metal, kind of like KISS/Billy Idol; some headbanging power rock. Gave me a bad attitude, which felt good.

4. Man No One Sees - Power ballad. This track sounds autobiographical; if nothing else, there's certainly an unspoken backstory here.

5. Wednesdays at Maura's - A heavy metal look at companionship in a coffeehouse. Quirky.

6. Leather Punk Rock Boy - A combination of Dance, Brit Punk, and Electronica, which I wouldn't think possible. I don't know why, but this brings a smile to my face... Very entertaining.

7. SkinHomo - Industrial Metal/Rebel Rock for the Pink Mafia. I feel neutral - this didn't do much for me.

8. The Girl - Dance Metal about what sounds like a lesbian predator, or maybe she's just aggressive about her desires?

9. Gunther - I'll admit it - This is my fave track! Enough innuendo to fill a Z Z Top album. I think this tune would make a good soundtrack for a cable TV series...A sinister giggle escapes my throat.

10. We Wait - Deep, sultry voice similar to Elvis Presley, full of desire and hunger. Music by which to violate virgins, who apparently can no longer wait. Are you lonesome tonight?

11. Rock-N- Roll Star (DJSM's Suped-Up Cherry Car Mix) Some World-Beat Dance with what sounds like a Hindu DJ intro? I shake my head, a crooked smile caresses my face... I don't know how to describe it, but I like it! Let's dance and romance.

I give The Undeniable's New Album, Rock-N-Roll Star, a B+

...But I could also go for an A. ;)

Overall - I'd buy it & play it at parties.

I think Red Bull & vodka would complement this CD nicely.

And for the old-timers: Irish Coffee.

UNDENIABLY OUT OF THE CLOSET

By Ann Marcaida of The Surreal Circus at Gather.Com

Years ago, The Undeniable (aka Robbert J. Bricker) was an evangelical Christian, founder of a small Ohio church. He was, to put it mildly, in the wrong profession:

"For years I tried to be something I was not . . . A true blue heterosexual. I sought healing or transformation via several ex-gay ministries... No matter how much praying, fasting and lamenting I did, I was still gay."

Bricker has crashed through his closet door. He’s now an accomplished musician as well as a video editor and leader of a creative multimedia group, Sinister Minister Underground Theater, who recently released his debut album.

Rock-N-Roll Star bares Bricker’s soul as he shares his difficult journey to self-realization. This is an electronic album with strong emphasis on studio production, balanced by Bricker’s excellent voice and heartfelt vocal performance. This album’s musical roots are many (club, classic rock, hip-hop, punk and metal among others) and its production is equally complex and multi-layered, occasionally obscuring Bricker’s clear, expressive tenor.

The title track appears on the album in two versions— an original radio edit and an extended club version. Although the electronic versions of this rags-to-riches story are pleasing, the catchy, classic-sounding rock tune seems to beg for performance by a live band.

This album is an eloquent cry of pain and plea for understanding. Rock-N-Roll Star speaks of nothing so much as a psyche shattered by societal expectations. There’s no song that conveys peace or self-acceptance, and plenty of songs in which the narrator identifies himself with the devil. For instance, Evil Creep alternates slow, hauntingly beautiful verses with a ranting refrain in which Bricker spits, “Why can’t you see, why can’t it be, I’m not an evil creep!”, while Filthy Mind explores the simultaneous urges of sexual attraction and repulsion.

Although Bricker left the Christian ministry years ago, he clearly still carries parts of it in his heart. In Man No One Sees, the narrator longs to shepherd a closeted friend through his coming out. The wall of electronic sound works well here, balanced by Bricker’s emotional, high-key performance. The result is something of an electronic hymn.

In an eclectic stylistic mix called, Wednesdays at Maura’s, the narrator basks in acceptance at a local coffee shop where “souls are lifted, spirits sifted.” The refrain contains what can only be described as a caffeine kick.

The album’s strongest songs, instrumentally speaking, are the least layered. Leather Punk Rock Boy features catchy guitar riffs and The Girl has equally compelling riffs and the strongest bridge on the album.

While the Rock-N-Roll Star album conveys its message eloquently, I can’t help but feel that there’s more of Bricker the musician (who took up the guitar only a short time ago) waiting to come out from under the electronic layers. Rock-N-Roll Star’s shining emblem is its last track, We Wait, whose haunting melody and lyrics come closest to describing self-acceptance:

"Full of love and drunk
On traces of kisses stained on our souls
Wait, We Wait, We Wait…"

And 'wait' Bricker has, not only for self-acceptance and societal freedom, but for the birth of this debut album which was long time in the making. I look forward to this talented musician unwrapping more layers of himself and his artistry in future albums.

THE UNDENIABLE'S ALBUM
DELIVERS UP ROCK-HARD VERSATILITY
By Lauren Buches, Unlacing the Victorians

Move over, Three Days’ Grace. The Undeniable’s debut album, Rock-N-Roll Star, takes angst to a whole new level.

The brainchild of Robbert J. Bricker, Rock-N-Roll Star, is a concept album based on Bricker’s experiences while on tour as a rocker. But don’t let the title track’s pop and feel-good success words fool you. This album is eleven tracks of in-your face lyrics supported by an energetic beat à la The Cure and heavy guitar riffs throughout.

The Undeniable brings a motley mix of angst, sadism and poetics to produce a polished piece of rock music with the versatility of style shown by the likes of Marilyn Manson, all created by the genius of Bricker, The Undeniable’s sole band member.

Much of the album is about finding the true self lost within. The first heavy track of the album, “Evil Creep,” describes Bricker’s own struggles with family, friends and his religious beliefs before his rock musician days. Even though the tempo remains constant throughout, the vocals and the instruments themselves are a conflict in styles, outlining mental struggles the singer goes through as he tries to understand and accept himself . The mild, soothing reflections of the verses abruptly dissipate in juxtaposition with the aggressive refrain. This song was appropriately used in Sinister Minister Underground Theater’s mini-movie, “Burn That Closet Down,” where a minister is destroyed by the truth he has been trying to hide from.

Following true rock star ethos, themes of unconventional sex are recurring throughout the album. In songs such as, “Filthy Mind,” “Leather Punk Rock Boy,” and “The Girl,” descriptions of homosexuality and violent lovemaking created by jarring, addictive lyrics and gravelly vocals are highlighted by amped up guitar play.

Unlike many modern bands, The Undeniable experiments with range, tempo, and music styles, sometimes within the same song. “Wednesday’s at Maura’s” starts off as a calmer, slower track at a softer tone. As the song progresses from the verse to the refrain, the vocals and music increase in volume. The tempo picks up at the bridge, emphasizing the chitchat between Maura and the singer, and then smoothly transitions back to the slower beat of the beginning of the song.

The Girl” is yet another song that displays this masterful ability to play with tempo—this time by slowing down at the bridge before picking back up into the song’s explosive description of dominating lesbianism.

Gunther” was one of my personal favorite songs due to its Guns-N-Roses influence from the Use Your Illusion era. The opening whistling (think of the opening whistle from “Civil War”) with the tale of this bumpkin named, Gunther, was reminiscent of the hick-like tune of, “You Ain’t the First,” combined with its hilarious rendition of a stereotypical penis measuring put to the test, screams G'n'R to me. The focus of the percussion on the downbeats of the song is true musical personification of swaggering, allowing the listener to picture Gunther and his opponent “confidently stroking up their inflating egos.”

Although the slowest song on the alums is, “We Wait,” it is still marked with the heaviness of the other tracks. Its rock ballad/lullaby tempo gently cleanses the wounds caused by the uncompromising self-exploration, sex and sadism of the rest of the album.

For the punk/rock/pop fan who loves the energy of My Chemical Romance with the heavier sound of Disturbed and angst of Three Days’ Grace, with a sprinkling of classic influences from the likes of David Bowie and The Sex Pistols, The Undeniable is just what you’re looking for.

Rock-N-Roll Star serves up a milkshake of genres where one can distinctly taste the separate parts that went into making the whole. The abrasive lyrics and knock-out instrumentals will leave your ear drums black-n-blue and begging for more.

The Undeniable is truly unique, never before in all my years in the music business have I experienced an artist with as much passion, drive, spunk and talent, who can go from a harder edged and controversial track like "I Surrender All", to a heartwarming, rock ballad like "Degrees of Separation" in a quick heartbeat."
