My favourite poets on myspace:
* Stray Branches
*Simes, ...

More general and myspacefavourites to come!

Mental Challenges ... You catch the drift, if not I'll get back to you on this (ahum).

Wisdom in madness, chaos and sometimes an oasis of peace in the eye of the hurricane, DREAMS, Hazel, the sound of crunching leaves and snow under your feet in dark autumn- and wintertimes, the first springsun, the burning summersun, mountains, books, music, snow, new discoveries, love be loved, the feeling of being alive, ... the colours of the Rainbow, drawing, poetry, photography, Butterflies, Chocolat, Sun, Challenges, inexhaustive lists, the sound(s) of silence, looking for seashelves, the smell of wood in the Alps, nicotine on the silverscreen, and last but certainly not least: the smell of his aftershave in your hair after he left ...

MusicDon't let the Best pass you by!

But let's get started and write about my music taste:
Leonard Cohen, Jacques Brel, Noir Désir, Boudewijn De Groot, Maria Callas, sometimes Dalida and Bill Whithers, The Doors, Serge Gainsbourg, Joni Mitchell, The Cure, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, on occasion some Barry White, Vaya Con Dios, Wolfsheim, The Stranglers, Mylène Farmer, Madrugada, Mercedes Sosa, Renaud, 16 Horsepower, Dead Can Dance, Kirlian Camera, Les Négresses Vertes, Verdi, Ennio Morricone, Suzanne Vega, Einsturzende Neubauten, The Animals, Marc Moulin, Sopor Aeternus (but please change something about your image), Saint-Germain, The Merlons, Joy Division, Carl Orff, Mark Lanegan, Endraum, Mark Lanegan & Isobel Campbell, Woodbelly (Cas hayley), Cockney Rebel & Steve Harley, The Church, Dr. Dre but only some favourite songs and The Chronic 2001 ..., Eminem & D12 on rarer occasions, The Sisters of Mercy, Portishead, Blondie, Mickey 3D, Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Simon, Morrissey, Beethoven, Shane MacGowan and the Pogues, DAAU in their early years, U2, Bono, The Edge, The Passengers (how could I almost forget), Depeche Mode but was it in his long hair or short hair period? Shame on me! (and him, cutting or growing his hair like that), Bach, The Velvet Underground, ah! almost forgot Fado, Nico, Lou Reed, JJ Cale, Astromancer, Delavega and on rarer occasions Admiral Freebee and Zita Swoon, Santana, Prokofiev, Marianne Faithfull, Everlast, Hound Dog Taylor, Moloko in their early days, Woodie Guthrie, Ladytron and sometimes Elastica, Wolfsheim, Herman Brood, Django Reinhardt, Doe Maar, Robert Johnson, Beethoven of course, a few Orbitals, America, John Lee Hooker, Bob Dylan, Georges Moustaki, Mikis Theodorakis (Canto General with Maria Farantouri!), Melina Mercouri, Cream, Sting & The Police, Peter Paul and Mary, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Iggy Pop himself of course, Johnny Cash, Van Morrisson, Memphis Minnie, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Katie Melua, Diana Krall, Nina Simone, Emiliana Torrini, The Clash, Irving Berlin, Elvis sometimes, George and Ira Gershwin (no kidding, e.g. Porgy and Bess with Sammy Davies Jr. and Carmen McRae), Moby, Gloria Lynn, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, The Beatles, Ella Fitzgerald, Mary J. Blige (as long as she sings ... what a voice), Muddy Waters, Deine Lakeien, Neil Sedaka, Cat Stevens, The Beach Boys, I'm almost afraid I have to mention Frank Sinatra but I just don't like his voice ... But Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra are the best :-)! Beyonce, Aaliyah and Alicia Keys? They can sing, have talent and use(d) it. I may not like all their songs, too sticky often, but once in a while, they appear on this kind of lists. Carla Bruni (did I mention Susan Vega?), Maroon 5 (I know it sounds silly), Caetano Veloso, Jose Gonzalez, Joao Gilberto, Klezmer, Nirvana but I still prefer them unplugged/acoustic, Front 242, some Rolling Stones, Miles Davis, Blondie, Eric Clapton, Cream, I Muvrini, The Lizzard King himself of course too, Jimi Hendricx, NWA, Red Zebra, Kurt Weill needs some further listening though (ahum) ... How could I forget? Paco de Lucia definitely! And some old time classics or specific songs of the past fifteen years ...

For old times sake maybe some nostalgia: Radiohead, Nirvana, Dive, Guns 'n Roses, Die Toten Hosen, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Die Form, Umbra et Imago, Apoptygma Berzerk, Dead Can Dance, Project Pitchfork, Type O'Negative, ... Unfortunately I lost track of Kirlian Camera and Dead Can Dance

Some recent favourite discoveries:
-Le Chant des Partisans (Leonard Cohen & Noir Désir)
-Masters of War (Bob Dylan)
-Moon River (PJ Harvey covers Sinatra)
-This Mess we're in (Thom Yorke and PJ Harvey)
-The Sensitive Kind (JJ Cale)
-Friday (JJ Cale)
-Bang Bang (my baby shot me down) (Nancy Sinatra)
-Hardheaded Woman (Cat Stevens)
-Sad Lisa, Sad Sad Lisa (Cat Stevens)
-God only knows (The Beach Boys)
-Glory Box (Portishead)
-Put your lights on (Everlast ft. Santana)
-If only tonight ... (The Cure)
-Astromancer - 'The Sound of the Sky', 'Your Letter' and last but not least 'Across the Water', short: all songs
-Poetry in Motion (Neil Sedaka)
-Bart Miller - A pale blue shade
-Love will keep us together (Neil Sedaka)
-Crazy (Gnarls Barkley)
-John Gilbert and The Lonesome - my favourite: 'She's meant to be a happy girl'

I could add some alltime favourite songs but most of them belong to one of the mentioned groups ... the other ones are just too precious

Some examples:
-Tacoma Trailer (LC)
-My Funny Valentine (Nico - cover Sinatra)
-Lay Lady Lay (Bob Dylan)
-Les Gens Raisonnables (Mickey 3D)
-Big In Japan (Alphaville)
-Bright Eyes (S&G, even if it were only for Hazel)
-Suzanne (of course) (LC)
-Street Spirit (Radiohead)
-Petite Fleur (Sidney Bechet)
-Une chanson de rien du tout... ;-)
-...

An endless process of search, accidental discovery and recommendations of friends, e.g. Cat Stevens, Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac and Christine Perfect, Katie Melua, The Beach Boys, Cockney Rebel & Steve Harley, The Church, ...
With special thanks to some anonymous people ;-)

Footnote: As you might notice, old, recent and new music are all three part of my musictaste and I listen to all sorts of 'genres', let's call it an eclectic music taste. My topfriendlist used to be packed with my favourite groups and artists, but you can read my musictaste above, they are in numerous other topfriendlist and they can count on my support anyway ... new talent, music, art and bands should have the same chances as the hotshots had once upon a time before. So I have done a complete 'make-over' and put my favourite new bands on my topfriendlist: check them out, there good! Don't let the best pass you by! Darktime returned, as I figured ...

MoviesWell I could have been a filmfreak if it were not that most movies bore me after a half an hour or I easily forget them ...

I have a rather large interest in older movies or movies who had a big influence on the evolution of cinematography in general.

Those remarks aside, some of my favourites: Hitchcock, Habla con ella, In your dreams, L'ours, Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, Trois couleurs bleu (and blanc et rouge but bleu is and remains my favourite), Code 54, Sliding Doors, The Godfather Trilogy, Memento, Lola rennt, Pulp Fiction and Trainspotting of course buth those return everywhere I guess, Mary Poppins (good choreography and rather absurd!), all Monthy Python movies and sketches (Live at the Hollywood Bowl!), Tais-toi, Dances with wolves, Hamlet (the one with Mel Gibson for those who doubt), Chocolate, Amélie Poulin, Silence of the Lambs, As good as it gets (excellent choice of actors!), Leon (Jean Reno? Respect!), Le Grand Bleu, (the making of) Richard the IVth (the one with Al Pacino), The Blair Witch Project wasn't bad (but I had more interesting occupations ;), Natural born killers wasn't bad either. And of course the Big Lebowski was a delicious delight :-). Lost in Translation was rather good too (and if you know I really don't like Bill Murray as an actor ...), Blue Velvet (if it were only for the song) and I am rather surprised Black Cat, White Cat was not yet mentioned: hilarious and yet so ... To be continued.
The Rosebud movie was a bit disappointing but fans persist you have to pay attention to the technical innovations for moviemaking.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Les deux frères would be the two next movies to see ... I'll get back to you (when I finaly find that last one :-).

Movies never to see again:
-Cast away
-Broken Flowers

For some obscure reasons I miss often half of the times about an hour of the movies, not the ones above of course
TelevisionNONE! It is Poison to the Brain! Is there a Remedy? Yes, turn it off. Is internet better? No, but you can get in touch with people who have the similar interests, ideas, vision or concept of life, way of thinking. Or just the opposite for a spicy discussion ...

For old times sake: Absolutely Fabulous, Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, The Young Ones, Ben Elton Stand Up Comedy, Van de Schoonheid en de Troost, In de Gloria, Alles kan beter, hm ... if my memory would just serve me better ... must mean it was certainly worthwhile and not a waste of time!
BooksHere we go again: Songlyrics of course! Moravia, Orwell, Kafka, Verbeke, Pasolini, Voltaire, Thomas Mann, Herman Hesse without a doubt!, Steven Gillis, Claudel (J'abandonne!), Ionesco, Bukowski, Bulgakov, Grunberg, Langston Hughes, Houellebecq, Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde - mostly theater, Gerrit Komrij, Emily Dickinson apparently, Leonard Cohen, Lennaert Nijgh, Diderot, Thomas Mann, Heinrich Böll, Camus, Céline, Sartre, Pablo Neruda, Baudelaire, some works of Duras e.g. L'amant, Amélie Nothomb, Rainer Maria Rilke, Paulo Coelho (but please people, none of that true believers ***), Mary Shelley, Thomas Moore and Erasmus, Aristophanes, Herman Hesse on his better moments, Corto Maltese, Asterix and Obelix, more, more, more, ... to come. I just read 'The book of longing' of Cohen, I fell down in grace from the first poem on, let the angel retain it's mystery ... and five minutes ago he made me laugh like hell!
Next was 'Temporary People' by Stephen Gillis: excellent :)!
Pff, the rest was more entertainment, the bible, The Manifest, de Sade, Voltaire, Suskind ...

Then there are some specific books I wish I never read or bought:
- Nooit meer slapen (W.F. Hermans)
- De hel bestaat (W. Spillebeen)
- De Avonden (Gerard Reve)
- Moderato Cantabile (M. Duras)
Not that they are always bad, e.g. De Avonden, but most of them reflect a way of living that equals surrender and defeat, sometimes without realising it.

"Plutôt mourir debout que de vivre à genoux"

But I have also a very healthy interest for mythology, Aztec and Mesopotamian are absolute fun! The Edda, the least you can say: interesting and very intriguing. Fables, like the ones of Fontaine are always welcome too. I'll get back to you ... when my memory serves me well (or better)!
HeroesNo more heroes ... didn't the Stranglers knew this already?

Some worship God, some the devil, some heroes ... No idolatry thanks :-), except for Leonard Cohen maybe but I wouldn't kill him. I'm not Axl Rose and that T-shirt lies somewhere in the closet of the past (but cool it was :-). And as an unexpected but delicious surprise: unexpected but true, I still saw Cohen perform live :).

Wishlist: whoever can help me get these items won't be heroes, but will get some gratitude: wanted dead or alive, preferably alive and kicking!
-Melina Mercouri: CD in Greek titled 'Melina Mercouri' 1988.
-Les deux frères, movie, Jean-Jacques Annaud. DONE
-La kermesse héroïque, movie Jacques Feyder. DONE
-all books and poetry of Leonard Cohen BUT (important!) in english please ... DONE
-maybe some pepperspray :-)?

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! My dear grotesquelittlepiglet. I would say you are an angel but I think you just prefer to remain a grotesque little piglet ;). Thanks, pinch back *cough* ;-)

About me:
Besides this profile, the group 'Don't let the best pass you by' and a bloggroup 'the Dead Poets Society', I write reviews and founded a second profile, less personal. The profile serves as a gatheringplace for poets of the spoken word to get the best opportunities around while so many talented spoken poetry profiles are scattered all over myspace. Everyone's welcome: fans, venues, radiostations/-programs, labels, ..., and to end this non-exhaustive list of course performers!

Lena Vanelslander started writing poetry in her twenties. Historian in training, her intrests reach much further than that: music, literature, photography, to be short: culture in general. She has previously been published in The Stray Branch, Savage Manners, The Delinquent and The Sylvan Echo. Currently she profiles writers for the journal Gloom Cupboard as contributing editor, her first chapbook will appear in September 2009 and her first book in November 2009. Leonard Cohen, Bulgakov, Oscar Wilde and JJ Cale are her favourite artists.

Besides poetry, I draw with soft pastels and rediscovered photography: passions pulsing through my veins ...

Well ... I'm back. But why?

Do you share the beauty of the moon and the sky? Do you have an interest in a different mind? Do you ask yourself Why? Then come to me ...

For my passions and my dreams, my pain and my grief, go to my blog and just read ... my poetry.

Le vent m'emportera à d'autres destins ... à tout à l'heure, une semaine, on verra ... it's always the same, to wake up in the rain, head in pain, hung in shame, miles and miles away from Home again ... always? Never say never ...

For all new or forgetfull friends :-): Link to the Group: Don't let the best pass you by!

The group 'Don't let the best pass you by!' aims at promoting new or unknown talent in all areas of myspace, music remains important. Coöperation and the exchange of ideas is the main issue. EVERYBODY is welcome: labels, production companies, bands, radio, TV, press, models, clothing, accesories, make up, equipment, venues, publishers, editors, directors ... You name it, it's there! You can have something and keep it that way or you can improve what you have. Apologies ahead if one should get more than one invitation: it's not always clear who got one and who didn't. The choice is yours ... pass the message through! Once you get started, just get into that Dark Blue?!

Never say never again ... did I ever say never?
Non ti fa illusioni dice il maestro a ...

Just remember this: a kiss is still a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh, it's always the same old story, a fight for love and glory, as time goes by ...

What was it again? The combination of brains and beauty with that right touch of decadence and insubordination to social and moral codes :-)?

Strange days indeed ... while that guitar still gently wheeps to the background of the song of life.

"those that dream with their eyes open are dangerous, for they do not know when their dreams come to an end." No luck for the wicked

Most called me The Traveling Lady, one Lady Midnight ... but it was a broken Hallelujah allright ...

For those who are about to read: I write so everybody can understand ... so I won't write in Russian, Dutch, French or Italian, but in Broken English.

And I must confess it: browsing through Belgian groups a tear appears realising that for the first time I do sense some national proud, i.e. music. And they say Belgians have no sense of a national identity! ;-)

"I don't consider myself a pessimist. I think of a pessimist as someone who is waiting for it to rain. And I feel soaked to the skin." you're not the only one, LC ...
"Seven to eleven is a huge chunk of life, full of dulling and forgetting. It is fabled that we slowly lose the gift of speech with animals, that birds no longer visit our windowsills to converse. As our eyes grow accustomed to sight they armor themselves against wonder." LC
The ones who remain to see wonder will suffer 'till ... maybe 'till Hank Williams has answered.

"The story of the ladies man is just a fable. You can't imagine the tenthousand nights I spent alone", a sad smile it was.

"The peace and rest that overcome one when losing the feeling having to win" is essential

"Anyone who's ever had a heart wouldn't go turn around and break it"

"Hm, I like it, it's good, yes ... but still not my favourite ;-)"

Music, Image and Motion in One ...

Radiohead - Street Spirit

An Englishwoman in New York. (08 May 2006)

An englishman in New York - An englishwoman in New York, shattering through the speakers in the subway, watching around with an uneasy feeling ... looking at and listening to the Sounds of Silence and thinking about a videoclip of a group of whom I could impossibly remember their name, as an image in front of my eyes: a girl, almost in slow motion, looks at the world: everything speeds up, people run, machines fly by in the subway, trains flash past her, plants grow and flourish in front of her eyes. Ainsi soit-je? Ainsi soit-tu? Ainsi soit-il.

A classic ... I do prefer the other - second - video, but I chose the first here because of it's controversy years ago.
