INFLUENCES ON THE FORTHCOMING "THE VENETIAN BOOK OF THE DEAD" RELEASE:
VINYL as musical entertainment - VINYL as human tragedy. The production of PVC has been implicated in occupational health issues. More than 150 former workers at the Porto Marghera (VE) chemical plant (owned first by Montedison then Enichem), have died of cancer since 1973, and another 600 or so are thought to be suffering from work-related illnesses. The company not only exchanged findings with American companies like Dow Chemical and Union Carbide, but also signed an agreement of secrecy prohibiting the release of information on the health risks of vinyl chloride. In 1997, the Italian National Institute of Health reported an abnormally high occurrence of cancer, such as liver, brain, and lung cancer, in employees who worked at the plant between 1956 and 1995. Many of the Porto Marghera/Mestre (VE) men who have died or are ailing started at the plant in the 1950s and '60s. "These men were on the front lines of a war, only they didn't know it"... Montedison & Enichem also are accused of polluting the lagoon with dioxin, a powerful carcinogen. "People still collect shellfish from the lagoon and sell it to restaurants in Venice"... "The bottom sediment is like a slimy, black tar" ... "The air is sometimes unhealthy and unbreathable" /// Questa é una storia vera e comune a molti paesi: il cloruro di vinile è un gas tossico, cancerogeno, infiammabile e talmente instabile alle normali condizioni ambientali che miscelato con l’aria può diventare esplosivo. After 2 years of recordings "THE VENETIAN BOOK OF THE DEAD" (IL LIBRO VENEZIANO DEI MORTI) by UNFOLK :: ALESSANDRO MONTI :: KEVIN HEWICK is ready featuring 10 new "protest songs" plus 6 instrumentals and it will be released in Autumn. The work was inspired by the industrial tragedies and environmental disasters in the Venice area during the 70's & 80's, when too many workers & citizens died by cancer in the name of money & profit (see the "Influences" section at left of page for details). // The "Unfolk Collective": KEVIN HEWICK, RICKY DE ZORZI, MADRIEMA, GIGI MASIN, KAR, BEBO BALDAN, HALO XVI, BOB BRIAN, ROMINA SALVADORI, ALEX MASI, CAMOMATIC, MONO-DRONE, MARCO GIACCARIA, FRANCO MORUZZI, PAOLO VIANELLO, R.S. thank you for your comment! John Paul Jones was a 'hero' of the american navy but was born in southern scotland and grew up in Whitehaven, Cumbria (where I was born). He invaded Whitehaven with the crew of his ship 'The Ranger' in 1772 but the crew couldn't manage to light the fires they'd set so gave up and went to the pub instead, a couple of them were arrested after a skinful of rum! John Paul Jones fled with his remaining crew and claimed it had been a succesful attack! It's a really funny story, thought I'd tell it from the perspective of an old sweetheart left behind after his years as an apprentice in the town.
