It all began on a dark and stormy night in a dirty white house next to an adult video store (which later caught fire and burned to the ground.) Our hero: Shannon Swords (mild-mannered alcoholic) kicked his first freestyle out of the blue, to the great surprise and utter disgust of his friends and family, and became the emcee commonly know to the world as Text. Naturally anyone (especially a skinny white boy from Urbana IL) sucks when they start rapping. But our hero did not give a damn. After many years of coming to terms with the fact he couldn’t carry a tune to save his own life, he embraced his new found love of hip hop and began studiously going about the business of becoming the greatest emcee that the town had ever seen.
Needless to say he’s got a long way to go.
As the years passed, he made his round; paying dues, slaying crews, collaborating with other artist in the region, and working his way up the ladder of independent hip hop. But dark times fell upon our hero. On April 29th, 2006, "Text" turned twenty one and proceeded to drink himself into a coma. During this time, the dream which he had so fervently wished began to slowly come true. Doors began opening for our hero but sadly he was passed out under a table in the back of the Blind Pig, far too wasted to realize what was going on. However, as he lay on the nasty floor he could hear the reverberation of an 808 drum loop growing louder.
The beats seemed to rejuvenate our hero and he lept to his feet, ready to step forward with the Rebirth of the Rap Kid. Recently he’s been taking the stage with other members of the Broke Rapper Coalition, bound and determined to achieve what he had once forgotten. His first LP, Unknown Scripts: My Sound Clique EPs was made available for purchase in mid January 2008. His upcoming release, Discretionless, is slated for mid February. These days you can find our hero around town, either at Monday night happy hour at the Blind Pig or killing the microphone on stage at the Canopy. But Text’s philosophy has always been that the best has yet to come.
