This is what I play at my radio shows:
50s: rockabilly, doo wop, exotica, mambo, cha-cha-cha, novelty,...|
60s: beat, surf, garage, soul, psychedelic, hammond grooves, ye-ye,...|
70s: punk, prog, weird funk,...|
80s: garage, psychobilly, experimental,...|
90s: did anything interesting happen except reviving the aforementioned?|
00s: garage, hammond rare grooves, and all the contemporary bands that play these music styles|
rest: soundtracks, jazz, weird covers, translated songs, every version of FEVER, CARAVAN, TABOO, MISIRLOU, SPINNING WHEEL, HUMAN FLY, and I can think of a million more...
of course I like a lot more, but I cannot play everything on Ungawa as it is a show dedicated to 50s, 60s, soundtracks and all that can be connected to these items.
(at other radio shows I play sometimes different kinds of music: what do you think of: Bauhaus, Joy Division, Virgin Prunes, Siouxsie & the Banshees, early Cure, Christian Death, Birthday Party, Cabaret Voltaire, Fad Gadget, Basement 5, X-Mal Deutschland, SPK, Suicide, early Sisters Of Mercy, Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, The Charlatans, The Primivites, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Crass, Conflict, Zounds, Flux Of Pink Indians, early Exploited, Dirt, Rudimentary Peni, The Damned, The Clash, Buzzcocks, Dead Boys, Dead Kennedys, The Adverts, The Undertones, The Kids, Sham 69, Ramones, X-Ray Spex, Executive Slacks, Cassandra Complex, (Scraping) Foetus (Off The Wheel), The Make-Up, La Muerte, T-Rex, Zolar X, Atari Teenage Riot,...)
And why not go on...: The Fuzztones, The Outta Place, The Chesterfield Kings, The Miracle Workers, The Nomads, The Lyres, The Cynics, The Gravedigger V, The Lords Of Altamont, The Sinners, The Morlocks, Thee Milkshakes, The Cannibals, The Pandoras, Desechables, Sex Museum, Les Thugs, The Hard-Ons, Radio Birdman, Catacombo, The Satelliters, The Evil Thingies, Les Terribles, The Montesas, The Strollers, The Hara-Kee-Rees, the 5-6-7-8's, The Kaisers, Billy Childish, Holly Golightly, ...
And the newest discoveries from 2005-2006: Peripherique Est, The Madd, The Way-Outs, The Clamour, King Automatic, Lords Of Gravity, The Bongolian, Messer Chups, Thee Ambassadors, The Gonks, Nouvelle Vague, ...
...
Sounds Like
Sounds like nothing else ever broadcasted live
No hi-tek studio geekiness, but the way radio programmers did in the 50s and 60s (I really believe 'video killed the radio stars'): two record players, a microphone and three buttons; that's all I need to make UNGAWA! So, if you play in a band which would fit in my radio program, don't hesitate to send me your records and they will be given airplay... Ungawa style!
This is clip from a Catacombo (aka The Ambassadors) live gig in a pub:
home made compilations like above (+100 volumes!!!), watch 'em all here.
Almost a million years ago I started deejaying for friends all over Antwerp and the most fun part of deejaying was the feeling of holding a 7" in my hand and gently putting the needle into the groove. My obsessive quest for the coolest 45s has given me the most amazing DJ spots all over Europe this last decade, even on three continents, as far as Melbourne, Australia.
Local radio station (Antwerp, Belgium) Radio Centraal: UNGAWA (1992-...) on 106.7 FM each Sunday 18:00-19:00 live broadcast... with Dirk Ungawa (www.myspace.com/dirkungawa)
