Sears Midwest Region Union Working to make a better work place Posted at 5:53 PM Nov 22, 2008 view more
This is from an article in the 1/28 Fort Worth Star Telegram...
Union membership jumped 12.4 percent of the nation's work force last year, amid wide spread job losses and credit woes. The ranks of organized labor rose by 428,000 workers in 2008,the biggest annual gain since the government began compiling such data in 1983 ,The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday. It's also the second year in a row that unions have added to their ranks. Membership increased by 311,000 in 2007,to account for 12.1 percent of workers.
These numbers will only continue to grow the more management cuts benifits, ignores worker rights and strips companys of millions of dollars for management bonuses.

For those of you not in the Des Moines area, Principal Financial Group (one of the city’s biggest employers) laid of 550 people yesterday. Andy Drish, a Gen-Y blogger and Principal employee, put it best when describing the lay-offs: “Companies tend to think that Gen Y isn’t ‘loyal.’ Now maybe they’ll understand why we keep our job options open. We’d be foolish not to.” Wow. Well said. The days of corporate America “taking care” of their employees are long gone. Take note.

Just some quick facts from a report called "How unions help all workers" by Lawrence Mishel and Matthew Walters. Unions have a substantial impact on the compensation and work lives of both unionized and non-unionized workers.
• Unions raise wages of unionized workers by roughly 20% and raise compensation, including both wages and benefits, by about 28%.
• Unions reduce wage inequality because they raise wages more for low- and middle-wage workers than for higher-wage workers, more for blue-collar than for white-collar workers, and more for workers who do not have a college degree.
• Strong unions set a pay standard that nonunion employers follow. For example, a high school graduate whose workplace is not unionized but whose industry is 25% unionized is paid 5% more than similar workers in less unionized industries.
• The impact of unions on total nonunion wages is almost as large as the impact on total union wages.
• The most sweeping advantage for unionized workers is in fringe benefits. Unionized workers are more likely than their nonunionized counterparts to receive paid leave, are approximately 18% to 28% more likely to have employer-provided health insurance, and are 23% to 54% more likely to be in employer-provided pension plans.
• Unionized workers receive more generous health benefits than nonunionized workers. They also pay 18% lower health care deductibles and a smaller share of the costs for family coverage. In retirement, unionized workers are 24% more likely to be covered by health insurance paid for by their employer.
• Unionized workers receive better pension plans. Not only are they more likely to have a guaranteed benefit in retirement, their employers contribute 28% more toward pensions.
• Unionized workers receive 26% more vacation time and 14% more total paid leave (vacations and holidays).
Unions play a pivotal role both in securing legislated labor protections and rights such as:
Q Management is hinting that we could lose the benefits we now have. Is that true? A The purpose of forming a union is to win improvements in wages and benefits, not to lose them. We start with what we have and go up. On average, unionized workers earn a third more than non-union workers in wages and benefits. Occasionally in organized facilities workers agree to grant concessions to aid an ailing company, but this comes after years of winning improvements.
The employees vote on whether or not to accept a contract. Would you vote to accept a contract that took away your benefits? Think about it. If having a union meant that the employer could reduce your benefits, why would the employer be fighting the union so hard?
Besides, it is against the law for the employer to retaliate against the union by taking away wages or benefits.
I hope that that there was a thank you for our past union brothers and sisters yesterday. They put a lot of time and effort so we can enjoy our holidays with pay, 40 hr work week, paid vacations, and what few benifits we have left. Support your districts effort and become an IBEW member and you future will change for the best.
