Welcome to United Cerebral Palsy's MySpace page. We appreciate you stopping by.

The mission of United Cerebral Palsy is to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with disabilities through an affiliate network.

More than 65% of people served by UCP have disabilities other than cerebral palsy. UCP consistently is rated as one of the most financially responsible charities, with 85 cents of every dollar spent directly on local programs and services.

UCP affiliates serve more than 170,000 children and adults with disabilities and their families every day through programs such as therapy, assistive technology training, early intervention programs, individual and family support, social and recreation programs, community living, state and local referrals, employment assistance and advocacy. Each affiliate offers a range of services tailored to its community's needs. UCP is the leading source of information on cerebral palsy and other disabilities and is a pivotal advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities.

For more than 55 years, United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) has been committed to change and progress for persons with disabilities. Founded in 1949, the national organization and its nationwide network of affiliates strive to ensure the inclusion of persons with disabilities in every facet of society—from the Web to the workplace, from the classroom to the community. As one of the largest health charities in America, the mission of United Cerebral Palsy is to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with disabilities through an affiliate network.

Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), often referred to as caregivers, personal assistants or homecare aides, provide daily supports to millions of Americans with disabilities living and working in the community. Unfortunately, the DSP workforce is in crisis. Low wages coupled with physically and emotionally demanding work has resulted in high turnover and heavy vacancies.

IT’S TIME
Back in the days of old, it wasn’t unusual to keep persons with disabilities away from the light of society. Families were ashamed to show family members with disabilities in public, they were subject to stay in a room alone, and sometimes locked away in an institution and forgotten. It was also thought persons with disabilities were unhealthy, different, fearful, and stupid. One should feel sorrow and pity for them, which in turn, formed the thoughts of the people outside of the family.
In today’s society, sadly, nothing has changed except for being ashamed when amongst society, and residing in the “Independent Living Projects” within our communities. We still haven’t gotten the acceptance from the social life and the work force within the communities we live in. Sure there is assistance for the disabled, and I get smiles from everyone I know, then I go to my house and they forget. This mentality is tearing apart our dreams of financial independence, and the hope to find someone to grow old with. I have no other choices.
In 2009, shockingly, traces of those characters from the 1950’s and earlier are still acted out. It’s long over due to break societies lack of understanding about the world of disabled people.
Today, in the 21st century:
IT’S TIME
It’s time to take our places in this country of the free in all aspect, and not be confused when we hear “the land of the free” or “All men are created equal”!
It’s time to end having someone telling us what we can or can’t do!
It’s time to show that disabled doesn’t mean unable!
And finally…
It’s time to make sure when someone who grew up “normally” with a disability, who works hard in school, and furthers their education, can have the same opportunities as their counter-part, who may be an “able-bodied” person, to have a chance at “ The American Dream.”

America is not a Third World. We are a caring society. I challenge you to help and get to know us, and rise up to our level of thinking
IT’S TIME
